GMontag's Journal: Shotguns shotguns shotguns 16

Journal by GMontag

This post by robi2106 reminded me that I need a shotgun, so I did a little surfing and asking around.

Firstly, my son is getting a Mossberg 590 A1 pump and it sounded kinda pricey, but I looked around the web a bit and it seems that the price he mentioned was a little better than what I had seen.

Secondly, I am not much into pump action but if I was I would be getting a Benelli Nova with 18.5" barrel. Might get one in the future, just not the same month I get the semi.

So, since I am all into the semi-automatics and Benelli is out of my price range there, I asked around. A friend has a Browning 12 GA in storage but does not remember if it is a pump or semi. Sounds like it will be a while before I get a look at that one anyway. If I do find out something this week it will help sway me to buy the other action. Umm, yea that was confusing. I want a semi and want to buy a gun from my friend, but if I buy 2 guns one will be a pump and the other a semi. Of these two one will be from that friend of mine if it is a good deal.

Anyway, I "discovered" these sweet guns! There was one at a gun shop I went to on Saturday. At first glance I thought it looked weird, since I am used to "classic" style guns. But after a while the coolness factor kicked in. Already knew it was probably a good gun, I was just put off by the looks.

Sooooo, it would not be the worst thing in the world for this friend of mine to fart around and wait until I am out of the market for a used shotgun. Having a Saiga 12 GA semi-auto and a Benelli 12 GA pump would be a nice combination :)

  • I always wanted to get an over-under. Yes, I know it isn't particularly practical....
  • Is a Browning A500 semiautomatic. Worth every penny. I've had it for 15 years now, and it was used when I bought it. Keep it clean and she works great. I find it is easier on my shoulder. Mostly pheasant, duck, and occasionally goose.

The only downside I discovered was I would peg the guy to my right while shooting trap with it. Joined a trap league out in the sticks while a bunch of us were in university. We were easily 20 years younger than the rest, and worked our way up from last place to about th

I really hope you're talking about your empties, otherwise, I imagine you moved up in ranks by lots of forfeits. :-)

      • We were shooting as a group, so nothing to gain. (grin) They did draw straws to see who was to my right each week. The worst score in our group had to buy the first picture of beer when we got back, so I considered it a tactical advantage. That, and it is the gun I hunted with. Why would I practice with the krufty pump I got as a kid?
      • One of the advantages of being "pilot in command" (PIC) on a HUEY is that the door gunner's ejection port on that side does not eject into your collar when he decides to be snotty and direct the fire so the ejected cartriges and links sspew behind your seat :)
  • Work? It looks funny. Are those actual pictures of it? The barrel looks waaay too small to be a 12-guage and it just well, looks funky. Would be awesome if it performed well however. The AK designs are a dream to maintain.

I'm also disappointed you didn't list the good ol' Winchester Model 97. Of course, you don't want pump action... so...

For my money, I'd go with a Benelli, yea, it's pricey, but you know it's quality.
    • As far as I have read they work well. A guy at work has a smaller guage from back before they were making 12 GA. He likes his.

The one I looked at over the weekend had a 22" barrel. Looked longer than the ones in picture. They look like actual pictures. The funny looks put me off for a bit too.

Planning on getting both the SAA and the Benelli, just not at the same time.
      • Well, if you get one, post a JE on how it does.

I'm considering getting a new shotgun here in the next few months and the SAA looks right up my alley, provided it isn't crap.

Also might motivate me to get and fix a bull-pup stock for the new mini.
        • It looked very sturdy and was stamped made in Russia, not one of the satellite states. I have heard Chinese made AKs and variants are pretty cheap.

The gun that guy at work has was made in Bulgaria. Have not seen one of those in person.
