Submitted by FozE_Bear
FozE_Bear writes "As I read this story, ICANN will sell TLD's! Looks like it will cost alot. From the story:
The regulatory body that oversees Internet domain names voted on Monday to revamp the domain naming system for websites, allowing them to end with words like "apple" and "orange" instead of suffixes such as ".com" or ".gov.""

ICANN Approves Expansion of TLDs->

Submitted by penciling_in
penciling_in writes "The Board of ICANN today gave final approval to the most dramatic change to the Internet — allowing the expansion of new Top-Level Domains (TLDs). ICANN's TLD expansion plan was first publicized three years ago on June 26, 2008 at the 32nd ICANN Meeting in Paris. ICANN in it's official announcement said today that it will soon begin a global campaign to tell the world about this dramatic change in Internet names and to raise awareness of the opportunities afforded by new gTLDs. Applications for new gTLDs will be accepted from 12 January 2012 to 12 April 2012. ICANN has indicated that it anticipates between 300 and 1,000 new TLDs could be created under the new program, providing an alternative to existing TLDs such as .com or .net."

Selling Incandescent Light Bulbs As Heating Devices 557

from the a-bulb-by-any-othe-name dept.
Csiko writes "The European Union has banned by law trading of incandescent light bulbs due to their bad efficiency/ecology (most of the energy is transformed into heat). A company is now trying to bypass this restriction by offering their incandescent light bulb products as a heating device (article in German) instead of a light device. Still, their 'heat balls' give light as well as heating. So — every law can be bypassed if you have some creativity!"

Ponca City, We love you writes "The Guardian reports that paleontologists have uncovered the remains of an ancient beast called Kosmoceratops richardsoni that stood 16 feet tall with a 6-foot skull equipped with 15 horns and lived 76 million years ago in the warm, wet swamps of what is now southern Utah. 'These animals are basically over-sized rhinos with a whole lot more horns on their heads. They had huge heads relative to their body size,' says Scott Sampson, a researcher at the Utah Museum of Natural History."

destinyland writes "An Australian Parliament member has resigned after admitting he'd used government computers to access porn and gambling sites. McLeay 'gave an uncomfortable press conference outside Parliament House,' notes one technology site, 'during which he admitted he had acted in a standard not expected of cabinet ministers.' Paul McLeay was also the Minister for Mineral and Forest Resources as well as the Minister for Ports and Waterways. In resigning, he apologized to his constituents and parliamentary colleagues, as well as to his wife and family."

I must disagree. The problem is that correct usage of the English language is rarely misunderstood. consider the missing comma here: "Mary had freckles on her but we liked her anyway." Without the comma, one could infer that Mary's ass was speckled. Also, the "Pimpin'" remark you speak of was completely correct in grammar and use of abbreviation.

You know, Adolf Hitler made these arguments about the safety of the police and populace, when his fiat when he extended the 1928 gun controls in 1938. Now I know that Nazi's didn't really need gun control laws at this time, but they sure help. A government fear of wacko extremists who may go off the deep end is a healthy fear to have.

The only problem I have with this logic, (peace is better than freedom), is that once the government controls this access, and peace returns, they will not return these freedoms. It will be a long long time before these restrictions are lifted. I know that Abe Lincoln returned free press to the US after the Civil War was over, but I think that was not the norm. And btw, I am NOT a Red-Shirt sympathizer. even if their collectivist ideals are benevolent, I am VERY anti-communist, but their right to be heard is MY right to be heard, and I will defend it.
