If there is one way to ruin a good lunch (complete with a peanut butter candy that tastes an aweful lot like fudge[1]) is a mealy apple[2].

I'm REALLY picky about apples. I want them to be crisp when I bite into them. I mean crisp. Any hint of 'mealiness' and I literally toss the apple out. I'd rather have an underripe crisp apple than a mealy apple (granted, I'm not a can of underripe apples, but the one I just bit into... yuck).

Anyone else a picky apple eater?

Oh, and I like all types of apples for eating, including granny smiths (you know... the green, sour baking apples... I LOVE'M!)

  • I literally get sick to my stomache when I eat a mealy apple. I want them crisp and juicy.
  • I am fairly picky about fruit in generaly.

    I hear you on the apple thing thougn. When I bite into an apple I want it to be crisp and tasty. I do not want to feel like I need to drink apple juice along with it to actually feel like I'm eating an apple. Ugh just thinking about it makes me squirm. Thanks a lot. :)

    Bananas must be just right for me to eat them.

        It's not like I'm weird, hell check out Some Woman, and once you do that, wipe the drool from your chin and ask her what color the sky is in her world.

          Oh and I concur, so long as it's not rotten I'll eat it. Doesn't bother me.

            I am the same. I'll eat it as long as it's not rotten. I'll eat the bruises & the soft parts. I prefer crunchy & crispy, but it's not necessary. I usually eat the apple cores too. I get a bit concerned when I see mold inside of them, but that doesn't stop me. I'm not entirely sure that I've eaten a mealy apple.

            I'll try to eat almost anything that's not rotten & fits in my mouth. The few exceptions include things like bitter melon because it's bitter, & various other wierd things. As for gra

  • Macintoshes are only good when they are soft. I do like Granny Smith's fairly crunchy though!

    I used to eat apples aall the time (I simply ADORE my gramma's apple pie, especially the apple raisin pie) but then the allergies hit. Now I can't eat apples. It sucks. I'm gonna go snack on a cow or something.

  • I tossed out an apple after one bite because it had gotten a little soft in the sun. I like to hear the apple crunch when I bite into it. Preferably even be a little cold, but I can take room temp.
  • And I'm picky about apples, too. You gotta get 'em fresh. And yes, granny smiths are excellent. My favorite out of hand apple, though, is a Jonagold. Again, freshness is key. Braeburns & Fujis aren't bad for that, either. But golden or red delicious? Blech. Couldn't pay me to eat one of those.

    • Fuji's are great (wife's fav). Red and Golden delicious have to be like 'right off the branch' fresh to be good. They turn soft within a couple days. Definately not worth getting unless you are going to eat it shortly after purchase.
  • Having grown up in Washington state my whole life you would expect us to have direct access to some of the best, most succulent apples on the planet. The kind that are so crisp even biting into the meat below the skin makes noise? You know, the one that squirts you in the eye when you bite it and people start bitching 10 feet away because the aura of "perfect apple" is taunting them?

  • I cannot stand mealy apples, either. I gave up on Red and Yellow Delicious apples years ago for that reason - every one I get is mealy. I have a strong preference for Fuji apples, but I like Macintosh, Gala, and Granny Smith apples too.

    If you dehydrate apples for snacking, mealy apples aren't so bad - the apple chips will have the same consistency whether using a mealy apple or a juicy one.

  • I've mentioned before, but the reminder is that I did a fair bit of farm work as a kid, including orchard work. Apples are pretty easy to grow, and not hard at all to find good ones. So easy that I will toss a mealy one. Granny Smith's are my favorite for just eating.

    Someone mentioned peaches. I don't eat peaches unless I've picked them. See, in order for them to survive shipment without bruising, they are picked nice and crispy crunchy, like apples. Guess what? That isn't how a peach is supposed to be. I
    • Never had a peach fresh from the orchard so I obviously don't know what I am missing. But since you have brought it up, if ever I am offered one fresh from the tree I'll be sure to accept.

      However I have had fresh mango from the tree whilst in florida. Ever since then nothing else will do when it comes to mangos. It is just not the same.

      Actually I've had key limes fresh from the tree(bush?) while in the Florida as well. Can't remember what it was used for but it was tasty, I tasted a slice of the lime

        I grew up in SC and GA. 'nuff said?

        I really need to find out how to do the Farmer's Market thing... that's usually the best place for produce, if you have one.

        Otherwise, we got our fruit/produce at Henry's in San Diego (same as Wild Oats in other places). It was always fresh and good... and SMELLED LIKE FRUIT.

        I hate going to the grocery store and looking at pretty fruit, but it doesn't smell like anything. :(
    • I remember in the book, Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, the Indians in the southern portions of the US had their peach orchards burnt down by the white man & the white man moved the Indians to another location. The author said that eventually the Indians forgave the white man for moving them to another location, but didn't forgive them for burning down the orchard. I'm vague on the historical details, but it did involve peaches & lack of forgiveness for certain peach related tresspasses.

      • For what it's worth, I don't recall ever eating fresh fruit that made me go, "Wow!!".

        You may have never had the chance. It used to be much easier when I was a kid, but even the roadside farmer these days uses the same awful seeds and plants as the big industrial farms. They just grow better with fewer bugs and spoilage. It's also what the public has come to expect.

        It's no wonder that many women claim to be a 'Georgia Peach', as nothing comes closer to a perfect peach (fruit) than... Well, it's best left
  • I have come to prefer fuji, but braeburn and pink lady apples are ok.

    I have come to despise the red delicious. Maybe I ate too many of them as a kid, I don't know, but I try to avoid them.

  • some of the things they do with apples to make them seem fresh and juicy tasting turn me off as well - for instance the little "feet" you find on some apples(esp. red delicious) are caused by chemical sprays. They do that just so the apples can be stacked for display. Also, supermarket apples are often waxed. Personally, I'd rather not eat that.
