Journal FortKnox's Journal: The Man of the Hour! (Photo Contest) 34

The Man of the Hour is...

SafetyCap
(With Tet coming up second).

Both guys have pretty much done my job. I just have the pics and the identities. Anywho, today is the last day I'm accepting pics. In fact, I'll be updating the list tonight and sending Safety the list of contestants. So if you don't get your pic in by then, tough cookies.

What's more is that SafetyCap has added a 'hot-or-not' feature that Organized Konfusion suggested. So we will have two things to fill out.

So send me your pics in a mad dash, and give kudos to SafetyCap for his work, and to Tet for his thumbnails.

  • you all have made this a fun contest to do. your efforts are appreciated :)

I wonder how many will guess me... I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking that and I can't wait to see how this turns out.

    A big Thank You.
    • I just want to 2nd what the fellow had to say. I really appreciate the work that you all did.

Maybe a way to submit photos would make it more easier. Maybe a MSN group? A Yahoo! group?

What would everybody think about having a Halloween photo contest? I don't know if I'll dress up, but if I did, it would be fun.
      • I have an idea for a photo contest I'm going to start in my journal. I'm already working on ways of photo submitting. Anyway, the idea is photos of pets (stuffed animals and knick-knacks are acceptable). I think it would be interesting to see how easy it is to match the pet with the slashdot personna.
  • :-)

Cat got your tongue? (something important seems to be missing from your comment ... like the body or the subject!)

  • Sir, You are a prince among php coders.
    • That's java, baaaby!

Don't insult a good java coder by claiming its PHP!

And I say this as a java coder ;-)

Oh, is that why it's so slow?

        <ducks> Pleasedonthurtme!

        • [Java] Oh, is that why it's so slow?

Slow, huh? (Pokes Ethelred with dissertation from Cambridge about Java webserver doing over 4 Gbit/sec of static content on a single P4) ;-)

Of course, a simple 'hello world' applet still manages to bring big workstations to their knees as it loads...

Static content in a lab enviornment means nothing, of course. My real world experiences show that Java sucks for serving dynamic content in reasonably large quantities (we're heading towards 20 million hits per day). Now I'll admit that a part of that could be due to implementation details. We're using tomcat, and are about to switch to resin. It'll be interesting to see how much of

Now I'll admit that a part of that could be due to implementation details. We're using tomcat, and are about to switch to resin. It'll be interesting to see how much of a difference that makes. But the JVM itself is a bloated hog to start with, so there's only so much you can do...

      • So why are the choices for the contestant only included down to the first letter B. Do I have some odd issue, or can anyone else see this as well...?

        • Re-read the entry. I said I was going to give him the list tonight (along with more pics). So you are just looking at the prototype. The 'game' won't start until, at least, tomorrrow morning (possibly late tonight).
  • How is the "Hot or Not" feature scored I wonder... More importantly, is there anything keeping me from voting for my ruggedly good looking picture 5000 times with or with out a script?

    jason :-)
    • Good point. SafetyCap! Do you do IP checks or is this the honor system??
      • Seems to be IP based. I just went in and voted for someone, then voted again 3 more times fr the same person. It never registered the additional votes. On top of that, I tried to change my vote to say #6 was Blackneto (the little kid looks an aweful lot like him) ;) It wouldn't let me change votes, either. This may be a problem.

        -Ab
      • Ok, I thought it was definitely IP. I went in on my other computer at work (diferent class network) and tried to vote #6 as Blackneto and could. But, since I noticed he (SC) put a cookie upon my machine to record the vote, I deleted it and tried again. Now #6 is $$$$$exyGirl and 65% hot.

Since Slashdot already put a cookie on my machine to verify my ID maybe we can decode them and read them directly to verify ID. No slashdot ID, no voting. We could even go farther and say unless you submitted a photo,

You are not able to access cookies from different domains, so the Slashdot cookie would not be any help...
      • The secret formula is: seed + yyyymmddhhmmss of first visit

This gets added to a cookie called "ftknox" and you're good to go.

If you want to be able to edit your vote, then that is additional functionality that I can do ... uh, later.

Sounds like version 2.0 will need to have some sort of account functionality and passwords and stuff. Maybe a newsletter, and member-only area, with special discounts and, and...

And a blog function, which we'll call "journals". With a borked point system we'll call "moderation". To unbork the "moderation" system, we'll create in v3.0 a slightly-less-borked "meta-moderation" system.

          Have at it! ;-)

          Cheers,
