FortKnox's Journal: Book Burning 5

Journal by FortKnox
New Mexico had a Satanic Cleansing of a variety of books, including Harry Potter, pokemon cards, Maxim Magazine, Oujia Boards, and even rumors of Tolkien books (you know, the devout catholic guy). I can only remember one other book burning in history, and it wasn't about violence and profanity in books like HuckFinn and other school banned books. El Paso Times also has more info, and there are lots of other links for those that like google.

Book Burning

  • I don't have a problem with a non-governmental entity doing something like this. The same constitution that protects source code as speach says that if you want to hold a public demonstration you are perfectly within your rights to do so. That is all this was, a public demonstartation sponsered by an organization. Its no different than a group of Democrats going out, buying a bunch of Republican polical posters and holding a political rally where they burn them.

Actually, a lot of conservative evangelical types would consider Tolkien's Roman Catholicism as proof of his ties to Satan [mt.net]. Anyway, it's pretty standard doctrine that LOTR, Buffy, D&D -- anything that contains paganistic elements -- is anti-Christian [religion-cults.com].

So big deal. Can you think of anything more pointless than a book burning? A nice harmless activity, keep the dumber fundamentalist types off the streets and out of trouble [davidsplace.com].

  • Judging from the the picture, it seems they had a decent sized file. Now we shall make 2 reasonable assumptions.
    1) The people buring these things didn't own a copy.
    2) Nobody would loan them a copy to be burned.
If these two postulates are true, then these guys had to go out and BUY COPIES OF THIS STUF TO BURN. You know what they always say, vote with your money. Harry Potter can't figure out why New Mexico loves him so much. They bought a lot of books that day!

I wonder if any of them have read C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia? The first book is The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, which has a lion names Aslon. When I read these I was young, but even then I noticed that Aslon's story reflected Christ's life. Aslon was even killed and brought back by "forces more powerful than the witch could understand." So, I don't think these books are anti-Christian, but according to this church's philosophy, it has a witch, it must BURN!

    • Why hasn't anyone modded this up. Its an interesting observation and a scream if they really had to buy these books in order to burn them.
  • "Hey, let me look at that and make sure it is in fact an instrument of Satan. Yes, oh yes, I see that it is. Maybe I should go for a walk...by myself into the tall grasses over there and make sure that it is in fact an undeniable tool of the devil."

I came, I saw, I deleted all your files.
