FortKnox's Journal: Some Tasty JE bits 17

Journal by FortKnox
Here's some random topics for you all to read.

I finally had a good week of picks. Only 3 bad picks (if the Steelers win tonight, which they will). Almost won the office poll, but I ranked Chicago too high (I'll blame it on Chicago fans *cough*Em Emalb*cough*) ;-)

Birthday was up and down (it was Saturday 10/19). I was told by the wife that I'd get to sleep in (first time in over 5 months), but Joey decided that his incoming teeth would start hurting friday night/saturday morning, so I was up 6 times that night, and ended up just staying up around 8am. Oh well. At least he was pleasant that day :-).
The inlaws gave me a gift certificate to Electronics Boutique, which was surprising, because I haven't played games in a while (other than a little PSX and an occasional System Shock 2, maybe once a week). So I went out and almost bought Metal Gear Solid, but opted for Baldur's Gate 2 (the price -finally- came down to $30). I've been having a blast running around with my level 7 monk :-D.
My Mom and Dad got me a great new set of really expensive pans (stainless steel, copper bottom), now that I have been cooking like a madman. The only thing I'm missing out of my kitchen that I'd really like to have is a pasta machine. Rolling the dough, and cutting it with a knife makes making pasta a three hour ordeal instead of a 30 minute ordeal. I'll have to go pick one up this next weekend.

I'd like to give a shout out to the execs at hallmark. Kiss my #@$^&*@ you #*$@#&$*(@#'s! Why in -the- hell did you have to put sweetest day in the middle of october? You make a fortune on Christmas and Thanksgiving! Why not make up the day somewhere in a month that has nothing, like august?!?!? My wife and I couldn't go out to dinner, because everyone had reservations for sweetest day. So, again I say to you hallmark: #$&*(@$&@*(# #@&*(#@ &$*&(*&$#*@!!
We're going to go out next Saturday, now. I wish people wouldn't buy-into hallmark made up holidays....

  • ...everywhere, rejoice!

I just went through BGII a few months ago - gotta love bargain gaming. Pretty good game, too.
    • STAND AND DELIVER... so that my hamster may get a better look at you!

Go for the eyes Boo, go for the eyes! CHAAARGE!

      Full plate and PACKING STEEL.

I'm already working on memorizing Misc's new lines. The best is that when he talks to Boo, Boo squeaks back :-D.
      • Perhaps I should pickup a copy of BGII. From what I saw of the first one, I didn't really care for it much. But hamsters always increase the fun factor of a game.

Of course, I'm guessing you don't get to attack giant robots and ninjas in BGII, so I still would have bought MGS.

  • Forgive my stupidity, but what the hell is that? Well, I could look it up...

During America's Great Depression , a man from Cleveland organized many people in an effort to provide a small token of friendship to the underprivileged, shut ins, orphans, and homeless. Today the holiday has expanded to include small tokens of appreciation to friends and neighbors too. These tokens of appreciation can be small gifts or small acts of kindness. This event is repeated on the third Saturday in October.

    Wow.

I've never heard of it, never celebrated it, and while I think the origins are cute, I don't think *anyone* in my family has ever heard of it...

Is it an Ohio area thang?

    • Perhaps. I've only known it a few years, all of which have been in ohio (columbus and cincy).
    • I think hallmark may be trying to spread it. I was in a hallmark here in Maryland on Friday and they had sweetest day cards. I had no idea what it was, just chalked it up as a hallmark holiday.
    • Never heard of it in New England, where I grew up and now live, and in Los Angeles in the years I lived there.

This page [americangreetings.com] confirms that it's an Ohio thing. "Primarily a regional observance celebrated in the Great Lakes region and the Northeast, Sweetest Day is gradually spreading to other areas of the country..Ohio is the top state for Sweetest Day sales, followed by Michigan and Illinois. Sweetest Day is also growing in popularity in Texas, California and Florida."

Yeah, I don't see that flying in New York.

      • Good - I thought I was just totally clueless about something. :) Since I've spent almost my whole life of the East Coast...given the state list I'm not surprised that I missed it.
    • It's in Wisconsin too. When my wife had just started dating (years ago), I was attending school in Madison and she lived in Milwaukee, so we planned everything on Sat. for travel and such. Well, my grandma was shocked I never heard of sweetest day and I didn't have any flowers for my date. She ended up giving me $50 for flowers and dinner. Since then, I haven't done anything for sweetest day and she really doesn't care. Besides, Halloween is a much better holiday.
  • My Mom and Dad got me a great new set of really expensive pans (stainless steel, copper bottom), now that I have been cooking like a madman. The only thing I'm missing out of my kitchen that I'd really like to have is a pasta machine. Hey, if you find a good pasta machine for a good price tell me. I am on the lookout for one right now.

    • I see them from around $30-$50. What price are you looking for? That usually includes the maker, and a fettucini cutting piece and spaghetti cutting piece. The additional cutting pieces run about $20. I'll prolly get a capellini cutting piece, cause that's my favorite pasta.
    • Still have yet to use the pasta making attachment on the kitchen aid...

but then again things have been so hectic I'm not even making my own sauce these days! (Don't tell my mom. please.)

But if you have an italian deli around (hard to find, but plentiful in NY/NJ) they usually have 'em for like $30.
  • Happy b-day!

I totally forgot about sweetest day. Last year I remembered and got my wife something. The funny thing is, she forgot last year.. well this year she remembered and I forgot :) However, I got bonus points for cleaning the bathroom and she was happy with that.

As far as the actual day goes, I agree- August would be a better choice. Better yet, take it off the calendar. We don't need another hallmark holiday. I look at it as just another way to put money in thier pockets. Unfortunately I think in the next couple of years it will be the fall version of Valentines day. Everything will be hyped up, guys like me will forget and get in trouble.. etc :)
    • And it isn't on my calendar.

Aren't there enough other things going on in October? It seems like everybody was born in this month. My sister's birthday is on the 21st, she married a man whose birthday is on the 14th and they have a daughter whose birthday is on the 19th. And then Halloween besides that. October doesn't want for a "holiday."
  • cause I sucked.

Hey, I tried to warn you that the Bears probably wouldn't win, hell, even said so in my journal. The truly sad thing was you had more faith in them than I did. It was really frustrating to have to sit there at work and listen to them get beat. Much harder if you can't see the game. Ah well. Go Steelers, at least one of us can be happy this weekend eh?
