7 in the evening is the normal time when work stops in almost entire private sector

Where do you work (location, industry)?

I've been in the electronics industry for almost 15 years in the Midwest and have rarely seen engineers work until 7 PM, nor 12 hour days, except in rare bursts.

(I've long suspected that many workers overestimate the amount of time they spend at the office . . . or at least engaged in productive work.)

I'll admit it: I didn't read the terms as closely as I should have. (Not to mention that they've changed since I signed up.)

The more I learn, the less I like it.

I'm especially bothered by this:

For content that is covered by intellectual property rights...you specifically give us...[a] license... This IP License ends when you delete your IP content or your account unless your content has been shared with others, and they have not deleted it.

So if I've somehow shared a video with one of my friends on Facebook and subsequently delete my account, Facebook still has a transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to my video?

Real Reason Why the White iPhone 4 Is Delayed 182

Posted by samzenpus
from the no-phone-for-you dept.
tekgoblin writes "There have been numerous reasons why the White iPhone 4 may be delayed with one reason being the color mismatch between the home button and the body. Well this time there is another reason. A source has told CultofMac that the reason for the delay is a light leakage issue caused by the case being clear. Light from the case leaks into pictures taken by the back and front camera on the white iPhone 4, causing distorted pictures. This problem is non-existent on the black iPhone 4, because of its already black case, so Apple has been looking for a solution to this problem, thus the delay of the White iPhone 4 till spring of next year."

Old People Enjoy Reading Negative Stories About Young 122

from the stupid-kids dept.
A study by Dr. Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick and co-author Matthias Hastall suggests that your grandma's self-esteem gets a boost when she hears about the stupid things young people do. "Living in a youth centered culture, they may appreciate a boost in self-esteem. That's why they prefer the negative stories about younger people, who are seen as having a higher status in our society," said Dr. Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick. From the article: "All the adults in the study were shown what they were led to believe was a test version of a new online news magazine. They were also given a limited time to look over either a negative and positive version of 10 pre-selected articles. Each story was also paired with a photograph depicting someone of either the younger or the older age group. The researchers found that older people were more likely to choose to read negative articles about those younger than themselves. They also tended to show less interest in articles about older people, whether negative or positive."

As soon as I finished engineering school, this ceased to be useful.

When I designed ICs at IBM, I could make any resistor value I wanted. Now that I'm involved with PCB design, all surface mount resistors are black (except 0 Ohm, which tend to be blue). Figuring out their value may require a microscope and a datasheet.
