Photovoltaic-based solar cells convert sunlight directly into electricity, and are made of semiconductor materials similar to those used in computer chips. When sunlight is absorbed by these materials, the solar energy knocks electrons loose from their atoms, allowing the electrons to flow through the material to produce electricity."

The U.S.-Israeli Tactical High Energy Laser project was widely considered to be the most successful energy weapon ever built. But the toxic chemicals needed to generate THEL's megawatts of power made the thing a logistical nightmare. It was scrapped. Now, the residents of Sderot want it back. An anonymous reader writes "Microsoft has submitted the follow-up to Windows Vista to the committee that oversees its US antitrust compliance, to ensure the operating system is meeting the terms of the company's agreement with the government. According to last week's status report on the US antitrust case, Microsoft "recently supplied" the Technical Committee (TC) with a build of the OS, code-named Windows 7, and the TC will "conduct middleware-related tests on future builds" of the software. The move was revealed in papers filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia. Those on the TC so far are the only ones privy to what the follow-up to Vista will look like, and Microsoft is mum on details of the software. But recent company moves and revelations hint at what can be expected from the software, which is due for release in late 2009 or early 2010. Lets hope Microsoft learns some lessons from the "Vista Capable" dilemma!!"

Feint writes "I'm working on an business platform for inter-company collaboration based on an open source software stack. As part of that platform I would like to integrate some sort of digital rights management for the documents managed in the system. The vast majority of articles are focused how good or evil it is to apply DRM to digital music or video. I haven't seen many articles address the open source solutions around how to protect business data like CAD/MSOffice/PDF/etc documents, which is a real need in business today. Can the Slashdot readership suggest some open source DRM offerings other than the Sun DReaM initiative (which hasn't had a release since Jan 2007)?"

Since it's fully open source, I know that outside developers will get on the ball and enhance what has already been done with Android in seemingly unimaginable ways in the future, but for right now, I'm just not at the point where I can say that the average consumer will go gaga for Android, at least, they certainly won't if they watch the current videos."

This will just kill off the planet. Great, it lowers the temperature, but the majority of life of the planet (read: algae, plants etc) requires sunlight to live and hasn't been that greatly affected by the temperature change (yet). The Americans (and I can say this because I am one) need to get a wake up call and start thinking about the environment. I'm not suggesting everyone become as radical as the Green party or anything, but we should at a minimum try to align with the rest of the world. Instead of trying to think up bizarre (and expensive) ways of blocking the sun, why not just reduce emissions and then try to harness more solar power?
Oh yeah, that would be bad for large companies. Also doesn't require 200billion of government spending to said companies to implement either.

The Americans (and I can say this because I am one) need to get a wake up call and start thinking about the environment. I'm not suggesting everyone become as radical as the Green party or anything, but we should at a minimum try to align with the rest of the world. Instead of trying to think up bizarre (and expensive) ways of blocking the sun, why not just reduce emissions and then try to harness more solar power?
