Eugenia Loli's Journal: 'Intelligent design' debate back in court

Journal by Eugenia Loli
Here is again the american way of life in the eye of the cyclone:

"Eighty years after the Scopes Monkey Trial, the latest legal chapter in the debate over the teaching of evolution in public schools is to unfold in federal court."

It is of no wonder Bush was re-elected. When so many Americans are so blindly religious, what one can expect from their voting habits?

Last evening we went for a ride with our car around our town. I saw a Catholic church and I told JBQ "hey, we should go some time". And he said "if you want, let me know and I can drop you off to an Orthodox church" (he is Catholic btw, I am Orthodox). And I replied "I don't mind the Catholic church or any other church. For me, God is where love is, I wouldn't even mind going to a Buddhist gathering". And JBQ replied "you got a point".

What I am trying to say above is that I perceive God as an unconsious entity that simply represents love. At least the Christian God, is just Love. It is not the kind old man with the beard, that's horseshit. The way I see God is much more philosophical than religious. This stance makes me "immune" to religious fanatical ideas over matters of creationism or abortion or virginity. No, it doesn't make me immoral, neither I believe I am a bad person. But it does make me more open minded over alternative explanations. Explanations that religious people don't want to hear or know about, let alone have their children teached at school about them. They want to live in their own little world where their God will love them because they have been good and faithful Christians/Muslims/whatever. My ass.

In the matter of creationism taught at schools I can only say this, and it IS a clear cut in my mind: public/government-funded schools are a way to propagate and teach science so the nation can move along. If the parents who want their children to believe in creationsism have a problem with that, they should send their children to church schools only. Let's see how much their children will last there (I wouldn't last a day personally).

Thankfully, not all Americans are like that (especially Californians). But many people in the South, really are that way...

Update: Thom blogs about this too.
