Entropy248 writes "In a stunning nose-thumbing to Apple, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Adobe Systems says they can probably port Flash to the iPhone using the public ally available SDK. This, of course, assumes they are able to get an "official" $100 license to do so. I guess there's no reason not to put off buying an iPhone anymore..."

The benefits are only subtly apparent and difficult to measure at best. It helps if your father has the same name! Since I joined the online community with CompuServe when it was partially owned by New York Telephone, I was always aware of the power of computers. It occurred to me that I could be indexed involuntarily permanently, and so I began using the suffix Jr. to distinguish myself from my father. It still ticks him off that I have WAY more results than he does courtesy of an OLD web page and the numerous sites that have shamelessly stolen my files with credit.

Anyway, when I go on job interviews I assume I am being Googled. Only a stupid employer would not do so, and most of the places I want to work at do not have stupid Compliance Officers. If they are Googling me, I'd prefer to control the results thank you very much. It doesn't hurt that I have a cool past, an industry relevant TV appearance [I'm NOT famous], past interesting magazine appearances [or rich], tons of posts in various news groups (alt.html or comp.infosystems.www.authoring.html anyone?), and a public history of a good life. I feel I not only have nothing to hide, but am proud of my life. Go on look me up and get jealous.

In his statement he says that the ITU will instead focus on bridging the digital divide, internet security and standardize broadband communications. With the upcoming javascript JIT compiler in Mozilla 2.0 speeding up these applications 100-fold, is javascript to become the mainstream general use language, and browsers the mainstream application environments?"

+ - The thing that cannot be Googled

tetsuo29 writes "So, I'm dissecting a Perl script that a co-worker wrote and not being very familiar with Perl, I have no idea yet what the line "$| = 1;" means. In trying to google for it, I've discovered that "$|" cannot be searched for by Google. Try it. It doesn't even return the standard page that says:

Your search — "[search terms]" — did not match any documents

Suggestions:

        * Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
        * Try different keywords.
        * Try more general keywords.

The results page is the equivalent of Google nothingness. Now, I think that "$|" is somehow related to CGI.pm and therefore probably CGI in general, but still shouldn't the brilliant coders at Google be able to code for this and index this as a search term so that clueless dolts like me can google for it to find out what it means?

So, I ask you Slashdotters:

    * What does '$| = 1;' mean in Perl?
    * Is there a way to google for that term?
    * Has anyone else found any text that Google will return 'Google nothingness' as I've described it?"

An anonymous reader writes "The European Parliament will vote at the end of this month on a controversial directive to criminalise infringements of all intellectual property rights (trademark, copyright, patents, etc). Some deputies has tabled amendments to require jail for non-commercial copyright infringements, such as internet filesharing. One of those deputies is Janelly Fourtou, the wife of Jean-René Fourtou, boss of Vivendi-Universal. Other amendments intends to criminalise "attempting, aiding or abetting and inciting" copyright infringements, which could render illegal all filesharing software. Recently, a court in Japan found the software author of Winny guilty of aiding copyright infringements."

PITTSBURG, California (AP) -- A senior editor for PC World Magazine was fatally shot in his home in what authorities said Wednesday was a drug-related attack.

Rex Farrance, 59, the San Francisco, California-based magazine's senior technical editor, was shot in the chest after four masked men broke into his home Tuesday evening, Pittsburg police said.

Because the TVs make use of flame retardant materials, damage was only sustained to the TVs and not homes. This is the first time I've heard of TVs having this type of issue. How safe are LCD and DLP TVs from this type of thing?"

Carl Bialik from WSJ writes "The FCC proposed a record $3.6 million fine against a single TV show, penalizing CBS and its affiliates for an episode of 'Without a Trace' that suggested a teenage sexual orgy, in the first batch of indecency fines proposed in more than a year, the Wall Street Journal reports. 'Overall, the FCC's action didn't provide a broad sweeping vision for broadcasters about what is appropriate for television,' the WSJ says. 'Notably, the FCC backed away from an effort to impose higher fines by holding all network affiliates responsible for a broadcast, instead of just the stations that had been flagged by a viewer in a complaint.'"
