Saul Williams, the New York-born artist best known for his unique mix of poetry and hip-hop, is following the example of more popular acts (most notably Radiohead) and releasing his new album, The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust, via the web for an optional payment. When you go to pre-order the album you are presented with two options: a $5 payment and a $0 payment. People who pay are able to choose between FLAC, 320k MP3, or 192k MP3. People who want it for free can only get 192k.

On his message board, Saul said that he "was very inspired by the recent Radiohead release and felt compelled, almost instantly, to follow [his] gut and expand on their concept."

The downloads will be available on Nov. 1st. And in stores early next year.

The album is produced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails.
