Could 93 882 mean 8/23, with 88 meaning something else? On 9/12/02 the first set was 62 691; see the pattern? 4th digit/5th digit-1st digit I am not saying that is what it is, but there is a pattern. The only thing is, on Dec 24, 97 we get 18 008. Gibberish to confound us? or refering to another date? October 81 maybe? Lol.

An anonymous reader writes "While Douglas Adams continues his attempt to set a new record for the longest extended lunch break, geeks all over the universe pay tribute to the beloved author by celebrating the tenth edition of Towel Day. Towel Day is more alive than ever. This year Richard Dawkins, one of Adams' best friends, has tweeted a Towel Day reminder to his numerous followers. The CERN Bulletin has published an article on Towel Day. There has been TV coverage and there will be a radio interview. The Military Republic of the Deltan Imperium, a newly formed micronation, has recognized Towel Day as an official holiday. In Hungary several hundreds of hitchhiker fans want to have a picnic together in a park. And there's a concert, a free downloadable nerdrap album, a free game being released, the list goes on and on."

Ninth Suicide At iPhone Factory 539

from the need-a-union-app dept.
shar303 writes "A ninth employee has jumped to his death at Taiwanese iPhone and iPad manufacturer Foxconn, China's state media reports. The 21-year-old worker was the eighth fatality this year. This raises questions as to whether the shiny finish of the latest gadgets available from mega corporations are tarnished by such information, and whether the mistreatment of workers deserves to be highlighted when considering such firms."

Microsoft Kills Support For XP SP2 315

Posted by timothy
from the too-soon? dept.
Trailrunner7 writes "Microsoft's announcement this week that it is preparing to end support for machines running Windows XP SP2 not only represents a challenge for the thousands of businesses still running SP2, but also is the end of an era for both Microsoft and its customers. It wasn't until 2004 that the final release of XP SP2 hit the streets, but when it did, it represented a huge step forward in security for Windows users. It wasn't necessarily the feature set that mattered as much as the fact that the protections were enabled by default and taken out of the users' hands."

I second that. I think that it also could actually be affecting some peoples work. If not yours, it could be affecting another programmer's work. And who is to say that you are qualified enough to find another job now. You may or may not be good at what you do. But if you take some people's advice and leave because you are a prima donna, be ready to fight for another job. Take one for the team. Give your boss a break It sounds like he maybe catching flak from the uppers.

Outlook Flaw Adds New Twist to URI Handling Saga->

Submitted by KidSid
KidSid writes "For months, Microsoft has taken a firm hands-off approach to the URI protocol handling vulnerability saga, shrugging off suggestions that there's a flaw in Windows that needs to be fixed. Now comes word that two Microsoft products — Outlook Express 6 and Outlook 2000 — have joined the growing list of Windows applications that can be used as attack vectors. From the article: "Microsoft is now affected by [its] own design change," Kristensen said in an e-mail exchange. "We hope that Microsoft now chooses the right path and creates a general fix for Windows [or] IE7 rather than start patching all their own applications and ask third party vendors to do the same.""

Admins accuse Microsoft of Draconian Hotmail cap

Submitted by kurmudgeon
kurmudgeon writes "The Register is fielding reader tips that Hotmail has placed Draconian limits on the number of Hotmail recipients who can receive an email. The first 10 Hotmail addresses included in a mass email go through just fine, according to these reports. But any additional addresses are returned to sender with a message that reads: "552 Too many recipients." (Microsoft denies it has placed any such restriction on the number of senders.) This would appear to be a violation of RFC 2821, which states: "Rejection of messages (for excessive recipients) with fewer than 100 RCPT commands is a violation of this specification."

Intel Rolls Out New X38 Chipset

Submitted by ThinSkin
ThinSkin writes "Two years after their previous chipset, Intel has finally begun rolling out their new X38 architecture, designed to capture the hearts and minds of the computer enthusiast with better performance and room for overclocking. Loyd Case at ExtremeTech has reviewed and benchmarked a pair of X38 motherboards from ASUS and Gigabyte, and has also included a brief primer explaining the X38 chipset. From the article: 'What these boards deliver is potential. They have the potential of pushing memory and CPUs harder than any previous Intel chipset. Both boards have flexible BIOS setup options, stable voltage regulation sections and external heat spreading technology built onto the printed circuit board. Toss in the added headroom Intel is offering in X38, and we could see some spectacular overclocking results in the future.'"

Intel Launches X38 Chipset - DDR2 and DDR3 Tested->

Submitted by
bigwophh
bigwophh writes "It has been quite some time since Intel launched a desktop chipset targeted squarely at PC enthusiasts. Of course, the P965 and current P35 have both been well received by motherboard manufactures and the enthusiast community, but these chipsets were actually designed for the mainstream space. In fact, the 975X Express, which launched almost two years ago, was the last desktop chipset Intel specifically marketed for enthusiasts. With today's launch, however, the Intel desktop chipset line-up gets a new flagship. To lay the foundation for the upcoming arrival of Intel's 45nm processors, the company is officially introducing the X38 chipset. The X38 takes all of the things that have made the P35 a success and adds a slew of new features designed to increase memory and graphics subsystem performance like PCI Express 2.0 support and Intel Extreme Memory technology. One of the motherboards evaluated in this article even features an embedded Linux-based OS that boots in a matter a seconds."
