Submitted by Elwood
Elwood writes "The folks from Social-Engineer.org are hosting a "Capture the Flag" contest at Defcon this year: "In a twist to the popular "capture the flag" game played by hacking teams every year at Defcon, the hacker conference is hosting a contest that aims to test participants' social engineering skills — without anyone get hurt." This will allow contestants to show off their skills, and allow businesses to better see the sort of threat they are up against to better prepare defenses."

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "The crew at social-engineer.org released a podcast today that is truly scary. They interviewed an identity thief and give a basic how-to into committing identity theft. Looks to be modeled off of the pentesters framework, but has a lot of application far beyond penetration testing. Plus, with the uptick of these sorts of attacks, looks to be very relevant today."

An anonymous reader writes "Speculation on the potential of botnet harvesting of modern video game consoles. From the article: These video game systems have evolved into sophisticated networked computers that people view as toys. And as a society, we don't take toys serious. But while these devices are disregarding out of hand, they have real use in some specialized computing tasks that are sought after by those with negative goals."
