RIM Doesn't Want 200 Fart Apps 244

Posted by samzenpus
from the do-not-want dept.
andylim writes "Just when you thought it was safe to dev a fart app for a BlackBerry, RIM's VP of platform product management, Alan Panezic, is making it clear that that's not want RIM is looking for. 'We don't need 200 fart apps in App World. Those are apps you'll use three or four times then never open again. You're not looking at ads, clicking on ads or buying premium upgrades, and the app isn't adding any value to your device.' Turns out RIM wants 'SuperApps', ones that keep you coming back for more because they add something to your life — be it ongoing entertainment value or doing something for you. Most importantly for developers, these are the apps that will garner the most revenue; whether it comes from premium upgrades, in-app advertising, or additional-cost content."

Yeah - but the beauty of Xmarks is it synced Chrome, Firefox, MSIE and Safari with one central repository of bookmarks. Now I have to keep four separate ones... one for each browser. For people like me who have to use and check my work on all browsers it was a major time saver when you have several hundred client bookmarks.

I've been using Xmarks since they were Foxmarks and it's the only tool out there that syncs multiple browsers. It's really handy when you have a folder full of client URL's and you need to check them on multiple browsers and operating systems. I'd gladly have paid for the service - but they never asked or proposed it. Sure some people would have balked and left, but those that stayed could have supported your business. I refuse to give my bookmark data to Google and I really just don't trust anyone else that is associated with a search engine or browser developer.

+ - Google/On2 To Discontinue Flix Cloud

Submitted by ElusiveMind
ElusiveMind writes "I just received an email from John Luther at On2 about the pending demise of Flix Cloud. As you may know, Google acquired On2 Technologies (creators of Flix Cloud) in February of 2010. Since then, we've reviewed the On2 products to determine which could fit into Google's product family. After careful consideration, we've decided to discontinue our Flix Cloud service. We will stop accepting new Flix Cloud customers on August 20, 2010.. They go on to say that they will continue supporting existing customers through November 15th in the name of smooth transitions. Currently they're recommending Zencoder for future Flix Cloud-type services."

Submitted by Albanach
Albanach writes "WikiLeaks spokesman Julian Assange has been quoted by the Associated Press as stating "the organization is preparing to release the remaining secret Afghan war documents". According to Assange, they are halfway through processing the remaining 15,000 files as they 'comb through' the files to ensure lives are not placed at risk."

Canonical Begins Tracking Ubuntu Installations 548

suraj.sun passes along this excerpt from Phoronix: "Just uploaded to the Ubuntu Lucid repository for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (and we imagine it will appear shortly in Maverick too for Ubuntu 10.10) is a new package called canonical-census, which marks its initial release. Curious about what this package provides, we did some digging and found it's for tracking Ubuntu installations by sending an 'I am alive' ping to Canonical on a daily basis. When the canonical-census package is installed, the program is to be added to the daily Cron jobs to be executed so that each day it will report to Canonical over HTTP the number of times this system previously sent to Canonical (this counter is stored locally and with it running on a daily basis it's thereby indicating how many days the Ubuntu installation has been active), the Ubuntu distributor channel, the product name as acquired by the system's DMI information, and which Ubuntu release is being used. That's all that canonical-census does, at least for now. Previously there haven't been such Ubuntu tracking measures attempted by Canonical."

Google & Verizon's Real Net Neutrality Proposal 254

Posted by Soulskill
from the ending-rumors dept.
langelgjm writes "Announced this afternoon in a joint conference call held by CEOs Eric Schmidt and Ivan Seidenberg, Google and Verizon have released a joint net neutrality proposal in the form of a 'suggested legislative framework for consideration by lawmakers.' This comes on the heels of last week's assertion (and subsequent denial) that Google and Verizon were close to concluding talks that would permit Verizon to prioritize certain content in exchange for pay. A look at the actual text of the framework shows some positive net neutrality principles, but there is also some more curious content: 'Wireless broadband' is singled out for exclusion from most of the agreement, and providers would be permitted to prioritize 'additional online services... distinguishable in scope and purpose.' Public Knowledge, a watchdog group based in Washington, has criticized the agreement for these provisions."

Tribalism Is the Enemy Within, Says Shuttleworth 655

from the can't-we-all-just-get-along dept.
climenole points out a post from Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth about internal strife in the free software community. He wrote, "Tribalism is when one group of people start to think people from another group are 'wrong by default.' It's the great-granddaddy of racism and sexism. And the most dangerous kind of tribalism is completely invisible: it has nothing to do with someone's 'birth tribe' and everything to do with their affiliations: where they work, which sports team they support, which Linux distribution they love. ... Right now, for a number of reasons, there is a fever pitch of tribalism in plain sight in the free software world. It's sad. It's not constructive. It's ultimately going to be embarrassing for the people involved, because the Internet doesn't forget. It's certainly not helping us lift free software to the forefront of public expectations of what software can be."

To Ballmer, Grabbing iPad's Market Is 'Job One Urgency' 764

Posted by kdawson
from the slate-envy dept.
Barence writes "Microsoft's Steve Ballmer has vented his frustration at the success of the iPad and said developing a Windows alternative is 'job one urgency.' 'Apple has done an interesting job of putting together a synthesis and putting a product out, and in which they've... they sold certainly more than I'd like them to sell, let me just be clear about that,' Ballmer told analysts. The Microsoft boss said the company plans to deliver a range of tablet formats in the next year, some based on Intel's next-gen Oak Trail processor. 'It is job one urgency around here. Nobody is sleeping at the switch. And so we are working with those partners, not just to deliver something, but to deliver products that people really want to go buy.'" In Microsoft's vision, slates will run a derivative of Windows 7.

I get my degree from Kaplan University in about 2 weeks and while it had it's ups and downs, my experience was mostly positive. Sure there were some idiots in the class and even one student who complained because she "couldn't write her paper in anything but ebonics" but those were the exceptions as opposed to the rules.

I made some friends that I keep in touch with via facebook and twitter who have similar interests and career goals and it's also been a great networking opportunity.

I put in a lot of time, but it was worth it. I graduated with a 3.85gpa and get all my degree honors in Chicago on August 7th.

I've not done any other online school - but because of being a single dad with a full time job and limited ability to be in a "real physical" classroom, it worked out well for me. I was in class for two and a half years and yeah, it was expensive, but I learned a lot and I grew as a developer and learned some a lot of things I would not have known ordinarily.... so I have to say my experience overall was very positive.

Last Roll of Kodachrome Processed 359

Wired's Gadget Lab picked up a wistful story from the Wichita (Kansas) Eagle on the processing of the last roll of Kodachrome film that Kodak produced. "Freelance photojournalist Steve McCurry, whose work has graced the pages of National Geographic, laid 36 slides representing the last frames of Kodachrome film on the light board sitting on a counter in Dwayne's Photo Service in Parsons [Kansas]. ... National Geographic has closely documented the journey of the final roll of Kodachrome manufactured, down to its being processed. Dwayne's is the only photo lab left in the world to handle Kodachrome processing..." If you have any rolls of Kodachrome sitting around not yet exposed, better get them to Dwayne's before December 10, 2010.

Ultimately this is a good thing. I've worked with a number of non-GPL based PHP solutions like Interpire and to a lesser extent Magento - and have (against my better judgement) "bought" modules for these which typically meant the thing is encoded with Zend Optimizer or some other crap and doesn't work half the time anyway.

While I'm not crazy about Wordpress, you do have the same issue with Drupal or many other CMS solutions. It's part of the price you pay for playing ball with someone elses CMS/Framework.

Frankly, I'll accept these terms any day than having to play ball with byte-code compiled PHP.

My idea of roughing it is when room service is late.
