... and to see someone make a niche game that actually caters DnD players VS whatever the heck Turbine tried to do with it. The screwed up on a lot of things. No randomized dungeons. No turn based combat (yes, it has it's issues but DnD is turn based - figure out how to do it right or GTFO). Absolutely terrible grinding with almost no content at launch. How do you take a niche market like MMOs, pick a setting that drills down your niche market even further, and then try to make it for anyone but these people?

MySQL Co-Founder Monty Widenius Quits Sun 140

BobB-nw writes "Michael 'Monty' Widenius, the original developer of the open-source MySQL database, has left Sun Microsystems and is starting his own company, Monty Program Ab, he said in a blog post Thursday. Widenius and Sun had a slightly rocky relationship since the vendor bought MySQL last year for $1 billion. In a much-discussed November blog post, he trashed Sun's decision to give MySQL 5.1 a 'generally available' designation, saying it was riddled with serious bugs. Meanwhile, Monty Program Ab will be 'a true open-source company,' with only a small number of employees who 'strive to have fun together and share the profit we create.' The company will work on the Maria project, a storage engine Widenius and others developed, he wrote.'"

Red Dwarf To Return, Find Earth 298

Lawrence Person writes "Everyone's favorite live-action science fiction comedy series will finally return to TV, with Lister, Rimmer, Kryten and the Cat all making it to Earth. The new two-part series Red Dwarf: Back to Earth will appear on digital channel Dave, will be written and directed by Red Dwarf co-creator Doug Naylor, and will reunite the line-up. 'It will sit alongside two further new episodes — the improvised Red Dwarf: Unplugged, which will feature the cast dealing with no sets, effects or autocue, and Red Dwarf: the Making of Back to Earth, a behind the scenes look at the new production.' Personally, I think this is pretty smegging fantastic."

Tycho and Gabe don't talk during it. Picking a voice actor for the parts would really be impossible as everyone has different opinions as to how they should sound. It also adds another expense to the project. I don't mind the text based dialog, there isn't an excessive amount of reading required and most of the dialog is very funny (at least the first time through).

For fun, go click on all the crabs on the dock. Yes, they all have different descriptions. :)

Origin of the iPhone 230

Posted by Soulskill

rambilly brings us a story from Wired about the origin and development of the iPhone. From the article: "Steve Jobs had tasked about 200 of Apple's top engineers with creating the iPhone. Yet here, in Apple's boardroom, it was clear that the prototype was still a disaster. It wasn't just buggy, it flat-out didn't work. The phone dropped calls constantly, the battery stopped charging before it was full, data and applications routinely became corrupted and unusable. The list of problems seemed endless. At the end of the demo, Jobs fixed the dozen or so people in the room with a level stare and said, 'We don't have a product yet.' The effect was even more terrifying than one of Jobs' trademark tantrums. When the Apple chief screamed at his staff, it was scary but familiar. This time, his relative calm was unnerving. 'It was one of the few times at Apple when I got a chill,' says someone who was in the meeting."

Which Linux distribution makes the best register?

Submitted by
Durrok
Durrok writes "I work for a rapidly growing company that is experiencing some growing pains in terms of financial capital. When looking for ways to cut costs the company decided to task the small group of Linux users at my work to determine if it would be feasible to get away from Windows and convert over to a Linux shop. We have had very little difficulty getting the programs we use on the registers to work under Wine but we cannot settle on which distribution to use. Which would you use if you were in our shoes?"

Ration of support staff vs PCs?

Submitted by
Durrok
Durrok writes "At the company you work at how many tier 1 techs, such as helpdesk, do you have? The company I am working for has been opening up at least 10 stores a year since 2003 and we still have the same 4 techs doing our tier 1 support. We are trying to convince our boss that we need to hire an additional tech but so far showing the percentage of ticket increase (240%), number of stores (41), and numbers of distribution centers (4) has not been enough to persuade him. I'm hoping that being able to show him real life examples will be more effective. In addition, is anyone aware of any industry standards for the number of PCs vs the number of support staff you should have?"

Scientists Identify Genes Activated During Learning And Memory 56

Posted by samzenpus
from the programmed-to-learn dept.
Researchers have theorized that certain genes must be activated to alter neuron activity inside the brain for learning and memory to take place. Finding and cataloging all the genes involved in learning is a formidable job. Scientists have now developed a computational approach to provide a rapid way to identify the likely members of this sought-after set of genes.

Kidnap Victim Visible Via Xbox Community Site 119

from the people-are-strange dept.
Via Joystiq comes the confusing tale of Shawn Hornbeck. Shawn was kidnapped more than four years ago, and his absence has made his parents worry and left a hole in his friends' lives. He's been returned safely home, so there's a happy ending to this tale. Strangely, though, he has been publicly visible for over a year now - via Xbox Live. From the Joystiq post: "The GamerTagPics profile for Xbox Live user 'DevilDevlin' shows the kidnapped Hornbeck outside what appear to be [alleged kidnapper Michael] Devlin's apartment. The profile was created Sept. 4, 2005 but hasn't been accessed since early 2006. DevilDevlin's Gamertag reveals that someone played Saints Row on the account as recently as Friday. It seems likely that Hornbeck used the account -- a Washington Post story reveals Devlin's neighbors 'often spotted Shawn out and about, visiting friends on his bicycle or playing video games with the apartment door open.'"
