+ - Brain silicon aka 'neruomorphic microchip' made and tested->

Submitted by Dr Max
Dr Max (1696200) writes "So researchers at the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich have created silicon based chips that can mimic what our neurons and synapses are doing. By combining these chips with a system/rules to organize the process, they have been able to pass human cognitive eye tests, and remarkably even create a similar neural structure as mammalian brains to do it. All this at a tiny fraction of the power usage (1/200 000) of a supercomputer capable of the same task; and these chips have been slowed down to human level, they could be run at over a thousand times faster.

So how long before we are obsolete?"

+ - Replacing brain functions with silicon->

Submitted by Dr Max
Dr Max (1696200) writes ""A maverick neuroscientist believes he has deciphered the code by which the brain forms long-term memories." So far he has built a silicon chip that can process information the same as actual neurons in rats and monkeys. More specifically replicating what the hippocampus (used to form long term memories) is doing, shown in experiments with rats; and also by implanting these chips in monkey brains they can replicate prefrontal cortex work (a part of the brain that retrieves the long-term memories created by the hippocampus) which is proven by giving the monkeys cocaine. Rtfa i can't give it justice."

+ - FPGA stock market miner->

Submitted by Dr Max
Dr Max (1696200) writes "So apparently the guys down at wall street aren't impressed with all that lag in their processors and OS for high frequency trading (similar thing happened with bitcoin miners). So the DNPCIe_10G_K7_LL, PCIe-based FPGA board comes to the rescue. Designed to minimize input to output processing latency on 10Gb Ethernet packets. This pcie FPGA unit is designed to get direct data feeds from the stock markets. Then contains all of the basic functions required to minimize the amount of time it takes to receive Ethernet packets, process them, respond deterministically, or for algorithms requiring processing, they can be hard coded to the job.

What's next for these guys quantum teleportation modems."

+ - AL-Qaeda's 22 tips and tricks to dodge drones-> 3

Submitted by Dr Max
Dr Max (1696200) writes "Ever wondered how AL-Qaeda operate under the ever watchful eye of the US army? Well here is a list of 22 of there tips and tricks on pulling a fast one. Most of it consists of the obvious like stay in the shadows, or under thick trees, with zero wireless communication; However there is also some less obvious solutions like the $2595 Russian "sky grabber" which can track the drones, or covering your roof and car with broken glass (not really sure why). They also claim good snipers can take out the reconnaissance drones which fly at a lower level. Now the question is, will all this still be relevant during the robo-apocalypse?"

Mars

+ - First manned mars mission maybe a reality tv show.-> 1

Submitted by Dr Max
Dr Max (1696200) writes "No joke, a dutch company called mars one is seriously planning a mission to Mars paid for as a reality TV show. The 6 billion dollars they need to pay for the one way trip for 4 astronauts, might actually be possible when considering everyone on earth will tune in for different landmark events (Their departure from Earth, the journey to Mars, landing, and the first months on Mars). Applications for wanna be Martians will start next year, and further trips are planned for after the first lot get settled; but be prepared for 10 years of training, 20 minute delays to earth, high radiation on the 7 month trip over, harvesting your own food (although some supplies will be sent from earth), and conducting research and construction on mars. gizmag also has a good write up http://www.gizmag.com/mars-one-human-settlement-2023/22799/"

+ - Graphene is there anything it can't do.->

Submitted by Dr Max
Dr Max (1696200) writes "So now not only is graphene the strongest, thinnest and best conducting material known to man. It is now shown to have superpermeability with respect to water as well. This allows the graphene to pass water straight through it like nothing was there while another atom or molecule (even helium) gets blocked. http://www.gizmag.com/graphene-superpermeable-to-water/21240/"

+ - Windows 8 tablets available on eBay->

Submitted by Dr Max
Dr Max (1696200) writes "During Microsoft's BUILD conference the company gave away 5000 Samsung tablets running a preview version of windows 8 to developers. As good as these tablets are (2nd gen core i5, dock, 64gb ssd, stylus, sd slot, 11.6 inch 1366x768 display), some are appearing on eBay with a high price; for example this guy asking $2700 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-Windows-8-Build-Developer-Tablet-Accessories-AT-T-Broadband-/290610910198?pt=US_Tablets&hash=item43a9c293f6. + - 2TB thumb stick->

Submitted by Dr Max
Dr Max (1696200) writes "During Display Taiwan, Transcend and Taiwan's ITRI displayed a finger-long USB stick that reportedly offers 2 TB of storage. That's no typo. It somehow holds up to 2 terabytes worth of information.

So far neither company has released anything official in regards to specs or a simple introduction, nor does the high-capacity USB 3.0 stick appear on Display Taiwan's website. But as seen in the video below, the "Thin Card" thumb drive is even smaller than a thumb, measuring slightly thicker than a penny. It offers a minimum of 16 GB and a maximum of 2 TB."

Dr Max (1696200) writes "IDG News Service — Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has stepped down from his position as CEO of the company and Tim Cook, Apple's chief operating officer, has been named to take the helm, Apple announced Wednesday.

"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come," Jobs wrote in a letter to Apple employees."
