2700 Personal Tax Files Missing After CRA Auditor ->

Submitted by
DotNM
DotNM writes "The personal information of almost 2700 Canadians are missing from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) after a worker took them home and let a friend download them onto a laptop.

The worker asked a computer technician at the CRA to download the personal information of the taxpayers along with the worker's emails to support a grievance against the CRA for failing to accomodate her medical condition.

The technician downloaded the information for her onto 16 CDs, which were not encrypted contrary to government standards.

Although the incident occurred in 2006, the CRA appears to have done little, if anything, to fix these issues."

RIM Experiences BBM / BIS Outage->

Submitted by
DotNM
DotNM writes "If you've been trying to send BlackBerry Messenger messages to your friends or family and not getting a response, you're not alone. CP24 and other media outlets are reporting that Research In Motion, the company that created the BlackBerry corporate email device, The outage apparently started yesterday, September 15 around 6:00 PM Eastern Time and is continuing even now. It also seems that not all carriers and locations are impacted.

BBM is similar to MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and ICQ in that they allow users to send "instant messages" to other users. These messages even indicate when they are delivered to the recipient's device and actually read by the recipient. Impacted messages are not displaying the delivery indicator, a "D" above the checkmark next to the message.

BlackBerry users are reporting a variety of problems ranging from being unable to send or recieve BBM messages to the device itself even operating slowly. Others have no problems with anything and are able to use BBM and other services without issue.

A CrackBerry.com thread seems to indicate that the problem is not just isolated to BlackBerry Messenger and is also affecting the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) which handles push email to BlackBerry devices that are not on a BlackBerry Enterprise Serve (BES). http://forums.crackberry.com/service-outages-f156/massive-rim-outage-since-sept-15-6-pm-651054/"

Bell & Telus To Charge For Incoming Text Messa->

Submitted by
DotNM
DotNM writes "Starting next month, both Bell Mobility and Telus Mobility will start charging customers a 15 cent fee to RECEIVE text messages. This has angered many customers, according to this article, even to the point of cancelling their service.

Bell will start charging on August 8 and Telus will start on August 24. Some have pointed out that this might be considered double-dipping. They get to charge the person sending the text message and now they're wanting to charge the recipient as well for that same text message, although it seems that the 15 cent fee does not apply if you subscribe to a text messaging plan. The New Democratic Party has started an online petition against this unfair practice — especially since customers cannot control messages sent to them.

Due to the lack of competition, Canadians pay some of the highest cellular phone fees in the industrialized world."

Google.de Domain Hijacked

Submitted by
DotNM
DotNM writes "Looks like Google's domain name was stolen... not once, but twice, at the same time. From the article:
...However they reportedly reacted by transferring the domain to another German provider, Favo, in a second case of domain theft...
Apparently Germany automatically approves domain transfers if they receive no response from the registrant. This is a dangerous practice."

How To Destroy Old Backup Tapes?

Submitted by
DotNM
DotNM writes "I've been tasked with destroying two medium-sized boxes full of tapes. I'm looking to find the most creative method of doing this en masse without me or my employer spending any money for anything to do it. I've thought about running over them with my car, but it's too cold outside (winter) to do that."
