Submission + - Aus iPhone pricing - yikes! (

Director of Acronyms writes: "Pricing for the iPhone in Australia has been released by Optus and Telstra. The plans surprisingly aren't wildly over the top for the Australian market — the cheapest Optus plan is $19 a month with $50 worth of calls and texts and 100MB of data. The most expensive is $179 a month for $1500 credit and 1GB of data.

The killer though is the price of the phone — that $19 plan is only the plan, you pay an extra $51 a month on a one year contract to get the 8 gig iPhone. On the $179 plan they'll graciously throw in the bottom end model for free. If you want to use pre-paid, you pay for the phone up front — the 8GB and 16GB models will cost $729 and $849, respectively.

So much for Jobs' assertion that the 8Gig iPhone would cost the local equivalent of US$199...."
