Personal data security while traveling

Submitted by Dice
Dice writes "It's been a couple years since I was last on a plane, but business will require me to make an inter-state flight soon and I may be vacationing in Europe towards the end of the year. Having read of the TSA and Custom's recent crackdowns on laptops I'm wondering what my options are for keeping my data safe without attracting attention. For example, I could encrypt my entire filesystem but I think it would be suspicious to refuse to enter a passphrase in order to allow the machine to boot. I have a lot of personal information on this machine, not to mention the client confidential stuff, and I would really rather not have anyone pawing through it. I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on fairly recent hardware and I'm willing to backup and then wipe the entire disk in order to re-install if necessary."
