There are a number of "alt coins" which appear legitimate, and are used by a wider community. This thread on the Bitcoin forums has a good overview, it also includes the less popular and dead crypto currencies: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=134179.0

I like the idea of PPcoin very much, being an ecologic alternative to Bitcoin. They still have mining, like Bitcoin and all other alts, and this will consume as much electricity. But when all coins are mined, the power needs will drop significantly. The creators devised a very clever way to record transactions in the block chain without the need to do all the calculations which are done when mining. Website, including the white paper with a detailed explanation: http://www.ppcoin.org/

Probably the oldest alt coin still in use today is Namecoin. It integrates a naming system in the block chain, effectively creating a decentralized alternative to DNS.

The most popular alt coin is Litecoin. By some it's called the silver to Bitcoin gold, as it provides faster transactions and more coins generated.

Aubron Wood has made a nice web page out of the comic, he was the first one to do so. But I like this one even better:

It also has all the "special" frames (when something changes, when there is dialog,...) listed at the bottom.

Drug Site Silk Road Says It Will Survive Bitcoin's Volatility 293

Sparrowvsrevolution writes "Bitcoin's recent spike and then collapse in value has convinced many that it's too unstable to use as a practical currency. But not the founder of Silk Road, the black market drug site that exclusively accepts Bitcoin in exchange for heroin, cocaine and practically every other drug imaginable. Silk Road's creator, who calls himself the Dread Pirate Roberts, broke his usual media silence to issue a short statement that Silk Road will survive Bitcoin's bubble and bust. The market's prices are generally pegged to the dollar, with prices in Bitcoin fluctuating to account for movements in the exchange rate. And Roberts explained that vendors on the site have the option to also hedge the Bitcoins that buyers place in escrow for their products, so that they can't lose money due to Bitcoin's volatility while the drugs are in the mail. As a result, only about 1,000 of the site's more than 11,000 product listings were taken down during the recent crash."

Yvonne Lee, Community Manager at Dice.com writes, "Not using standard job titles, not tying your work to real business results and not using the right keywords can mean never getting called for an interview, even if you have the right skills to do the job. I once heard advice to use the exact wording found in the ad when placing your keywords. I think you're even more unlikely to get a job if you do some of the things on this list."

Peter Sunde himself has mixed feelings about TPB AFK. In the end, he's not very happy with it...

On the one hand, the movie is great in terms of photography, editing, sound. The experience the viewer gets of the movie is kind of like a thriller. But on the other hand, it’s not my view of the things that actually happened during this period.

The film maker, Simon, who I consider a good friend, and I have different views of what the movie should be. It’s his film though so he makes all the shots. There are lots of scenes in the movie that are well edited to be something different than they are. This is all part of making a movie, drama is needed. I’m not happy with all of them, and I don’t like the dark and gloomy view that Simon has of the past years. The editor (whom I’ve never met, so he has no real idea of who I am, just what has been filmed of me) has cut the movie in a way that is very different from what I’ve experienced.

Here is an article in Dutch which includes a rendering of the island.

The capacity would be 300 MW, equivalent to a standard gas power station. It could provide electricity for 3 hours a day. This would be sufficient to intercept peak usage during morning and evening hours (1.5 hours each).

One of the contractors would be the Belgian dredging company which also worked on the Palm Islands in the United Arab Emirates. Building of the island would take around 2 years. Price: around 800 million euros.

A number of Pirate Parties around the world are experimenting with tools like LiquidFeedback (Wikipedia link). First of all, they use it internally to shape their party program, policies,... But in countries with elected representatives like Germany, they are also looking into using these tools to let the people have a voice in the point of view their representatives defend. Some interesting articles on the subject: How the German Pirate Party's "Liquid Democracy" Works & How Germany’s Pirate Party is hacking politics.

LiquidFeedback is an implementation of the ideas of Liquid Democracy, providing tools for making proposals, suggesting amendments and voting. A mayor feature is the ability to delegate your vote if you don't have the knowledge or don't want to invest time for certain subjects. For different subjects, you can delegate to different persons, or chose to vote yourself. This gives you a mayor advantage over classic representative democracy, where you have to vote for one person or party which will represent you on a wide variety of subjects. Also, you have the option to change your delegates later on without having to wait for the next elections.

No, that's not what they are talking about. This is about searching in the iTunes store: there is still no way to indicate you are searching for an app, a song or a TV series, and you get all of them in the search results. When in the iTunes store, the search field has no drop down.

And the drop down in the search field when browsing your library was already there in iTunes 10, with the All / Artist / Album / Composer / Song options. They just added the "Search Entire Library" option now.
