Submitted by Dante_J
Dante_J writes "In the proud tradition of being one of the best "grass roots" FOSS conferences on the planet and just weeks away, linux.conf.au 2011 in Brisbane Australia, is shaping up nicely. Keynote speakers include Vint Cerf, Eric Allman, Mark Pesce & Geoff Huston. Many impressive Miniconfs, Presentations, Tutorials and an Open Day are included. Everything from FOSS rockets to kernel hacking, haecksen to Meego. This is one of those rare occasions of the FOSS community gathering in one geographic location, expressing both breadth and depth. A week of geeky goodness. Regos are available now, but time is limited."

At Last, an Australian Space Agency? 3

Submitted by
Dante_J
Dante_J writes "In the Australian Federal budget presented last night, as well as big national infrastructure spending, an amount of $48.6 million over four years was allocated for an "Australian Space Science Program". Normally a Space Program is managed by a Space Agency. Does this now mean that Australian will follow the recommendations of the Senate Space Science report and give up it's rather inadequate title of the only top 20 GDP nation not to have one? With nations like Vietnam, Bangladesh and Bulgaria forming or maintaining Space Agencies, this government infrastructure is obviously not limited to G-20 nations. Discussions to combine Australian and New Zealand airspace have been undertaken, should that translate to aerospace too, and both nations form an ANZAC Space Agency together?"

New GLXP team, International & OpenSource smar

Submitted by Dante_J
Dante_J writes "The privately funded race for the moon that's the Google Lunar X PRIZE just got more interesting with the announcement a new team, that's smarter than your average bear. Team White Label Space is group of experienced space professionals based in the Netherlands but with a genuinely international team, and through at least one of their partners; Lunar Numbat, has embraced Open Source tech to provide Space Science solutions. From a strong background in space engineering and knowledge of the costs involved, the group realized that there were numerous global companies that could finance a Google Lunar X PRIZE mission with less than 10% of their annual advertising budget. Just consider all the product placements in the recent Star Trek movie! As the 2012 deadline grows closer, the GLXP action is hotting up."

It's official, Australia needs a Space Agency

Submitted by
Dante_J
Dante_J writes "In the final report published by the Australian Senate inquiry into 'The Current State of Australia's Space Science & Industry Sector' entitled 'Lost in Space? Setting a new direction for Australia's space science and industry sector', it calls for the formation of a 'Space Industry Advisory Council' to oversee the creation of a fully-fledged Australian Space Agency. Of the top 20 GDP nations, Australia is the only one without a Space Agency, which impacts on many aspects of ordinary life, not to mention Research and Engineering endeavours. Every satellite operated by Australia is owned by another party and the costs of this alone are comparable to that of a Space Agency. The report is a tidy piece that drew upon submissions form Andy Thomas, and an impressive collection of Australian Academics and Space Science entities frustrated by successive generations of government apathy. While this report is welcome, lethargic Government action in a climate of competing concerns is not expected to stem the flow of Space Science brain drain out of Australia any time soon."
