Submission + - The Individual Midnight Thread 40

unitron writes: Trying to figure out time zones is starting to make my brain hurt, but apparently in a bit over 6 hours somewhere on the other side of globe from Greenwich the Week of Slashcott will begin, as Midnight arrives for anyone in that zone, and then it travels west, where I will encounter it in about 23 hours.

So if we can get this thread out of the Firehose, I was thinking that, as the 10th arrives for us in our respective locations, we could leave here what may be our final farewells to Slashdot.

Until Midnight, this is our meeting place, our City Hall, our town square.

(and yes, our playground)

After that I'm not sure where we can congregate to discuss how the Slashcott's going and whether it's time to move on.

I'm going to jump the gun and lay claim to "So long and thanks for all the Karma", and perhaps someone could do a Bob Hope and re-write the lyrics to "Thanks for the Memories".

In the meantime, a bit of housekeeping.

An AC beat me to the week-long boycott idea by a couple of hours, and suggested the date range of the 10th through the 17th.

As part of a group of people familiar with the concept of beginning a count with 0 instead of 1, I really should have spotted the mistake of putting 8 days into that particular week.

So, should Slashcott Week end as the 17th begins, or do we give Dice a bonus day?

The war on drugs is *extremely* expensive and has lead to a slew of lost liberties, and the rise of the darth vader non officer friendly police force, who are tasked with..well, war on the population. They are WAY more military than police nowadays and are more or less adapting and using the same tactics they use to war on brown folks over in the middle eastern oil producing areas. You look at pics and vids of swat raids..except for the diff between desert camo and black ninja camo, the gear and dudes are the same, their hopped up on steroids attitude is the same (more war on drugs hypocrisy, cops are the largest abusers of illegal steroids after pro athletes) the tactics, flashbangs, door kicking, shoot if anything looks suspicious, kill all the dogs immediately even when they are no threat all, just for some insane blood sport, blast folks if they make a "suspicious" movement or a "furtive" movement etc, terrorize the children...I mean, this sucks.

It also *doesn't work*, it is a total failure, and has become a clear and present danger to all the citizens of the US because of the low intensity but growing daily civil war that is going on in Mexico right now to "control" the illegal drug trade. It's so bad that it has spilled over into the vast illegal immigrant armed crime gangs that infest so many large cities in the US now. It won't take much to tip Mexico over into full time anarchy and chaos, with a collapse of their government and a host of military warlords, etc, and tens of millions more illegals flee north to get away from it.

I have no idea of the total cost borne by the tax payers for this farce, but it is beyond a joke now and we need to end this war on the population like yesterday. It only makes things worse. I'll take a society with junkies able to handle their habit for two bucks a day and no military police roaming around smashing in doors and no junkies needing to steal to get their money as opposed to two hundred bucks a day they need to come up with, by any means necessary + this heinous police state.

Journal Journal: What happened to tags? 2

The arrow next to the tags on a story no longer has any effect (under Firefox 3, at least). How are we supposed to tag stories now?

Let's organize this thing and take all the fun out of it.
