Juror's Tweets Overturns Trial Verdict-> 1

Submitted by D H NG
D H NG writes "The Arkansas Supreme Court had overturned a murder conviction due to a juror tweeting during the trial. Erickson Dimas-Martinez was convicted in 2010 of killing a teenager and was sentenced to death. His lawyers appealed the case on account of a juror tweeting his musings during the trial. Tweets sent include "The coffee here sucks" and "Court. Day 5. here we go again". In an opinion, Associate Justice Donald Corbin wrote "because of the very nature of Twitter as an... online social media site, Juror 2's tweets about the trial were very much public discussions." Dimas-Martinez is to be given a new trial."

Bing Caught Copying Google Results-> 1

Submitted by D H NG
D H NG writes "Google had gone public with the results of a sting operations that it says showed Bing was copying Google results. Following the practice of cartographers adding fake data to their maps, Google created fake results for gibberish search strings (such as "mbzrxpgjys") and performed Google searches for those terms on computer with IE Suggested Sites and Bing Toolbar enabled. Sure enough, these results started appearing in Bing for those search terms. Microsoft did not deny the allegations."

Google mistakenly collected Wifi payload data->

Submitted by D H NG
D H NG writes "After the Data Protection Agency in Germany asked Google to audit the Wifi data that its Google Street View cars were collecting, Google discovered that it was inadvertently collecting more data than intended. Besides the SSID and MAC addresses, it was also collecting samples of payload data from open (i.e. non-password-protected) WiFi networks. Google is asking a third party to review the software at issue, how it worked and what data it gathered, as well as to confirm that they deleted the data appropriately; and internally reviewing its procedures to ensure that its controls are sufficiently robust to address these kinds of problems in the future."
