Why are T1 lines still expensive?

badfrog writes "Over the last 10 years, DSL and cable modem has upped its speed (although in some instances only slightly) and dropped its price. However, the price of a T1 has stayed almost exactly the same. If you had asked me 10 years ago, I would have predicted any geek that wanted to would have fiber or their own T1 line to the house by now. What is with this sad state of affairs that a 'business class' 1.544Mbit connection is hundreds of dollars more than a 6Mbit cable connection? Is it a legitimate case that a high upload rate should increase cost so significantly?"

Book as College Graduation Present?

An anonymous reader writes "In my personal life, I have recently switched from an XP box to using OSX (filmmaker tired of fighting Adobe Premier). The one thing I miss is Microsoft OneNote. Its notebook style structure, ease of use and straightforward ability to share notebooks (and synch them) aided me in organizing both my personal and professional work. I have struggled to find something as intuitive (or feature rich) for OSX. Short of running parallels (and buying a legal copy of XP), can anyone suggest an alternative for OSX?"

I'd like to know, what are some good functional, and more importantly, manageable options to convert existing desktop computers into what would essentially be a Citrix terminal? I was thinking some brand of Linux that starts up an X11 session, starts the Citrix client and connects to our server farm. The user would see a Windows logon, our apps would function as normal and I'd get the benefit of performing a LOT LESS client-side maintenance. Any suggestions?"
