New plastic is strong as steel, transparent 1

Submitted by
Andreaskem
Andreaskem writes "Physorg.com published an article about a new material that supposedly is "strong as steel but lighter and transparent.". "The researchers created this new composite plastic with a machine they developed that builds materials one nanoscale layer after another... Mother of pearl, the iridescent lining of mussel and oyster shells, is built layer-by-layer like this. It's one of the toughest natural mineral-based materials.""

PEBKAC Still Plagues PC Security->

Submitted by
Billosaur
Billosaur writes "ARS Technica is reporting on a study release by McAfee and the National Cyber Security Alliance (as part of the beginning of National Cyber Security Awareness Month) that suggests when it comes to PC security, the problem between the keyboard and the chair is even worse. PEBKAC has always been a problem, but the study highlights just how prevalent it has become. 87 percent of the users contacted said they used anti-virus software, while 70 percent use anti-spyware software. Fewer (64 percent) reported having their firewalls turned on, and only 27 percent use software designed to stop phishing attempts. Researchers were allowed to scan the computers of a subset of the users, and while 70 percent claimed to be using anti-spyware software, only 55 percent of the machines of those users scanned showed evidence of the software."

FAA wants satellite navigation on aircraft by 2020->

Submitted by
coondoggie
coondoggie writes "The Federal Aviation Administration today proposed all aircraft flying in the nation's busiest airspace have to have satellite-based avionics by 2020. Such systems would let air traffic controllers track aircraft by satellites using a system known as Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B), which is ten times more accurate than today's radar technology. That ten-fold increase in the accuracy of satellite signals will allow air traffic controllers to reduce separation standards between aircraft, significantly increasing the number of aircraft that can be safely managed in the nation's skies, the FAA said. Traffic is projected to grow from 740 million passengers last year to one billion in 2015, and double today's levels by 2025, the FAA said. http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/20143"

Sneaky White Hats Pull Surveillance Cam Switcheroo->

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "If you've seen a Hollywood caper movie in the last 20 years you know the old video-camera-spoofing trick. That's where the criminal mastermind taps into a surveillance camera system and substitutes his own video stream, leaving hapless security guards watching an endless loop of absolutely-nothing-happening while the bank robber empties the vault.

Now white-hat hackers have demonstrated a technique that neatly replicates that old standby.

Amir Azam and Adrian Pastor, researchers at London-based security firm ProCheckUp, discovered that they can redirect what video file is played back by an AXIS 2100 surveillance camera, a common industrial security camera that boasts a web interface, allowing guards to monitor a building from anywhere in the world."

Why Are Games So Easy Nowadays?->

Submitted by mbstrlbstr
mbstrlbstr writes "The fact that I'm in my 20's and a Wii owner means, of course, that I grew up with the NES being one of my best friends. So,.. it stands to reason that I enjoy playing classic games such as those available on the virtual console. In fact, the virtual console represents MOST of my Wii game library. Now,.. I'm not saying I'm a master at video games, but I manage to finish just about any game I play nowadays. Back when I was younger this wasn't always the case, and until now I attributed it to my being too young to fully understand the games. I see now that this clearly is not the case."

German court: you must not log IP adresses!->

Submitted by
tmk
tmk writes "The local court of the Berlin district of Mitte has barred the Federal Ministry of Justice from logging IP adresses of the visitors of its website. German law prohibits storing personal data for a longer time — if not needed for accounting. German privacy activists have started a campaign Wir speichern nicht, ("we don't log your data!") which provides manuals how to turn off the IP logging on your server."

With this system you would be able to hear external sounds while wearing your iPod earbuds but it also offers this tidbit. "...stored external sound can be presented with a full range of media playback features (e.g., forward, backward, pause, replay)". All the parts already exist someone just needs to make it easy to tivo (verb) your day. humm..."

DUI Defendant Wins Right to Source Code

Submitted by freshman_a
freshman_a writes "The Minnesota Supreme Court ruled in favor of a man, charged with a DUI, who claimed he needed the source code to the Intoxilyzer 5000EN to fight charges in court. From an article at the Pioneer Press:

"That's the gist of the decision, that it's discoverable," said Underdahl's attorney, Jeffrey Sheridan, of Eagan. "The problem is, the manufacturer of the thing thinks they can hold it back and not tell anybody how it works. For all we know, it's a random number generator."

AT&T Removes anti-Bush Lyrics From Webcast->

Submitted by
Walter Wart
Walter Wart writes "AT&T removed the lyrics ""George Bush, leave this world alone." and "George Bush find yourself another home." from Pearl Jam's Lollapalooza broadcast. AT&T claims that its content monitor had done so "by mistake". This has serious implications for political expression in an increasingly corporatized Internet. Pearl Jam said that it highlights the need for Net neutrality."
