+ - JDK 7 to be delayed (yet again)->

CloudShape writes "Another bit of fallout from the Oracle takeover of Sun. It turns out that the Sun developers working on the next JDK have spent the last few months running around in a panic and/or advising Oracle lawyers on how to sue Google, instead of doing something useful. They're now canvassing for opinions on whether they should: (A) release JDK 7 in mid-2012 (yes — 2012), or (B) release what they've got as JDK 7 Lite in mid-2011, then release the bits that haven't been done yet as JDK 8 at the end of 2012. I voted for Plan B, as the better of two poor choices. What do you think?"

TheDarkener writes "Adobe seems to have made an about face regarding their support for native 64-bit Linux support for Flash today, and released a new preview Flash plugin named "Square". This includes a native 64-bit version for Linux, which I have verified works on my Debian Lenny LTSP server by simply copying libflashplayer.so to /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins — with sound (which I was never able to figure out with running the 32-bit version with nspluginwrapper and pulseaudio)."

decent_dissent writes "Could the Legislative branch of government, be replaced by collaborative software? Is representation obsolete? As it was explained to me, many years ago in grade school, the founding fathers chose representatives to participate in the day to day legislative functions. This was to not burden the citizens with traveling via horse or carriages, the long distances required to collaborate. It occurred to me that this is no longer true. All of the proposed bills could be handled like wiki's and content. The voting interface could be like an email inbox, with alerts and links to new bills. Participation could be all you can eat, as much or as little. Best of all, make it all OSS. While definitely not a perfect idea, I think that with the right code it might operate better than the current method. Being a daily reader of slashdot, I am curious as to what the readers here think. Please discuss."

The Committee had great difficulty in coming to a decision, but the Terms of Reference stated that only sketches portraying Her Majesty's Government in an appropriate light could be selected. Based on this initial position, and after full consultation with all stakeholders, a Mandate for Change was approved, allowing the Committee to produce a refined Position Statement regarding the criteria for the final selection. The Committee subsequently applied the aforementioned criteria to select "The Ministry of Silly Walks" as the ultimate recipient of this accolade, simultaneously producing three Procedural Recommendations for future evaluations of this nature and meeting all applicable performance targets as a result.
