Slashdot: Requests: Profanity Filter (2)

Comments Filter:
  • Can you imagine the dictionary needed to have an effective profanity filter?

The ET server I usually play on is supposed to have a profanity filter, but it is pretty much useless. How many ways are there to get across some ideas:

    gay
    ga y
    g ay
    g a y
    ghey
    g hey
    g he y
    g h e y
    gh ey
    ghe y
    g4y
    g4 y
    g 4y
    gh3y ...

See the problem? That is just one word. It is a shame that folks will not grow up and have discourse like grown adults, but as such, we have a choice of where we spend time.

    • Taco mentioned the same. Let me explain.

I cannot keep the kiddies out. For them, i just foe them, so no matter what they try, i won't see it.

However, there are many who simply use profanity in a message, not as a way to break a filter, rather to express themselves in a specific way. Those people are not out to break the filter. As such, a message modifier can easily block those messages.

      The main points here are

      1) It is not to block language, it it a per user thing to filter. Similiar to long message.

      • Read -1 once, breaking the filter is a sport here on slashdot, you know that. Usually mods will -1 them for you, but very few of the mods here care about profanity, so those posts will not be -1'd. Once folks know that there is a profanity filter they will try to break it.

One option though is the spend some time working on a profanity filter for slashcode and submit it back to the project. Then it might get implemented.

The obvious advantage of this would be that the kiddies wouldn't know you had it, and so wouldn't try to get around it. Also, you could tune it much easier than a /. central system to your own particular level of discretion.
        • I think you're missing the point. For the ones who try to get around it, they get foed. If they sign up with a new name, i have the new percentages of users marked down too.

Thus, the profanity filter if for people who are not trying to break it, but use profanity anyway.

If there was a profanity filter, i think it would be extremely simple. Wherever the code checks for add +1 (good karma bonus) to the message (must be on the submit) add a check if it uses one of a few hard coded words. Then, add a filter t

Then, add a filter to each persons page Profanity Modifier (+6/-6). Finally, add it to which ever query does the modifier checking.

I suppose marking a flag on a record when it is inserted wouldn't be too hard, but it would not allow users to customize their "bad word" list. However, the de

I'm kind of new to this stuff, would you want to help? If you are, contact me via AIM. I'd take a look at the code, and basically need someone to cheer me on. :)

To thine own self be true. (If not that, at least make some money.)
