Microsoft Poland Photoshops Black Guy To White One 964

wanted writes "If you look at Microsoft's Poland business solutions Web site, you will probably not notice anything odd about the main picture. However, when you compare it with the original English version, you can see that someone decided that showing black people in Poland is probably not going to be convincing to business. They just Photoshopped the head of a white guy in for the black one, in an amateurish way, leaving his hand unchanged. (Here's a mirror in case something should happen to the original.)" We noted a few months back that the city of Toronto had done something similar.
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Zombie Apocalypse Mathematically Proven in Study (www.cbc.ca)

Peacenik45 writes: A University of Ottawa mathematics department study led by professor Robert J. Smith? has concluded that a zombie outbreak will more than likely destroy civilization. Smith? (the question mark is intentional) asked his students to come up with a scenario for mathematically modeling the spread of disease. When he suggested that the dead may factor into the spread of disease, three students came up with the zombie model. They do provide hope, however, writing that an early strategic response to an outbreak could eradicate the zombies withing ten days. They write, 'the most effective way to contain the rise of the undead is to hit hard and hit often.'

Submission + - Average gamer is 35, fat and bummed (msn.com) 4

mdonley writes: CDC study finds playing leads to 'lower extraversion' in adult gamers

A new study says the average age of video-game players in the United States is 35, and oh, by the way: They're overweight and tend to be depressed.

Investigators from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Emory University and Andrews University analyzed survey data from more than 500 adults in the Seattle-Tacoma area. The subjects ranged in age from 19 to 90, according to the study, published in the October issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Unix

(Useful) Stupid Unix Tricks? 2362

So the other day I messaged another admin from the console using the regular old 'write' command (as I've been doing for over 10 years). To my surprise he didn't know how to respond back to me (he had to call me on the phone) and had never even known you could do that. That got me thinking that there's probably lots of things like that, and likely things I've never heard of. What sorts of things do you take for granted as a natural part of Unix that other people are surprised at?

Patents

IBM's Teri-is-a-Girl-and-Terry-is-a-Boy Patent 277

theodp writes "The USPTO has granted IBM a patent for utilizing naming conventions to assign gender-based avatars for instant messaging. A user named Teri, IBM explains, would be given a girl avatar, while a user named Terry would be provided with a boy avatar. The three IBM 'inventors' were stymied by users named Pat, who as a result will be assigned a 'generic, genderless human figure image as his or her avatar.' Way to honor that significant-technical-content patent pledge, Big Blue!"
