Submission + - VoIP + Text Messaging Used to Save Lives->

Second Signal automatically notifies call-responders (volunteers) that something is up by sending a text message to their cell phones or pagers. When a member sees that message, they just call a local telephone number and can hear all of the radio traffic from when the call was dispatched, right up to the current moment. The recording skips over the time when the radio is quiet, so a member quickly catches up when they call in. Touch tone menus allow the caller to jump forward and back in the recording by time, or incident by incident.

Firefighters can use the web site later to download the radio traffic from the incident to use it for training.

More than 85% of fire departments in the U.S. are mostly call-responders not full timers waiting for the alarm to go off. Over 40 percent of the homes in the U.S. are protected by call responders. Less than 10 percent of all departments are entirely full time."

Submission + - Transparent Aluminium -- Is it finally here?->

CFD339 writes: "New Material is extremely strong — and Transparent

The stuff is really strong, really stiff, and lasts a long time. It isn't porn though, it is a polymer.

From TFA: "Science Daily — By mimicking a brick-and-mortar molecular structure found in seashells, University of Michigan researchers created a composite plastic that's as strong as steel but lighter and transparent."
