Wikia busted purchasing FFXIClopedia for $200,000?

Submitted by
An anonymous reader writes "Final Fantasy XI (FFXI), Square-Enix's unique entry into the MMORPG
market, is not the most popular of the genre. Nonetheless, one of its
strengths lies in the broad community support that it inspires in its
fans. A number of unique metadata sites have sprung up around it,
including the groundbreaking FFXIAH (http://www.ffxiah.com) Auction
House tracking service.

One of the newer entries to this list is FFXIclopedia
(http://www.ffxiclopedia.org), an FFXI wiki. As with most wikis, the
content was provided principally by the users and the community. So
what happens when businesses notice such a grass-roots niche market?
Apparently, the answer is: a cover-up of misspent fund-raiser moneys,
and a sale of the content to Wikia for USD $200,000 in cash and stock
options. Source: http://euphidime.com/wp/?p=4"

AACS Vows to Fight Bloggers

Submitted by
Jonas Wisser
Jonas Wisser writes "The BBC is carrying the story that AACS has promised to take action against those who have posted the AACS crack online. Michael Ayers, chairperson of AACS, noted that the cracked key has now been revoked, and went on to say, 'Some people clearly think it's a First Amendment issue. There is no intent from us to interfere with people's right to discuss copy protection. We respect free speech.' The AACS website tells consumers how they can 'continue to enjoy content protected by AACS' by 'refreshing the encryption keys associated with their HD DVD and Blu-ray software players.'"

Microsoft and Yahoo (re)considering merging

Submitted by thrillseeker
thrillseeker writes "According to the WSJ, Microsoft and Yahoo "are taking a fresh look at a merger of the two companies or some kind of match-up that would pair their companies' respective strengths", in order to defend against the juggernaut of Google. Personally, I can ignore and not use either of them just as well combined as separate, but it probably makes sense to some executive somewhere."

Vonage's Request for Retrial Denied

Submitted by
rfunches
rfunches writes "The New York Times (via Reuters) reports that Vonage's request for a retrial of the patent infringement case brought against the company by Verizon has been denied by a federal appeals court. Vonage had hoped to have the lower court's ruling overturned because of a Supreme Court ruling on Monday. From the article:

"The appeals court said Vonage could cite the new Supreme Court ruling as part of its pending appeal. Vonage had argued that the March 8 infringement verdict in favor of Verizon should be reconsidered after the Supreme Court loosened a crucial legal standard, making it easier to invalidate some patents on the grounds they are obvious inventions."
