Let's not forget where the bottleneck is - the I/O. It's expensive but once you build a fast and solid storage system, correctly configure it and partition your data properly over a sufficiently large number of hard drives, RAIDs, LUNs etc., you might be able to use SQL. We run a database of 10TB on MS SQL with hundreds of millions of records with an equal rate of reads and writes and could not be happier.

Interoperability standards for Web Apps

Submitted by Begemot
Begemot writes "With the rapidly increasing number of hosted web applications, there have been a number efforts to recreate some of the interoperability conveniences of offline operating systems — single sign-on, passing of files between web apps, passing user preferences like language, and organizing files (folders, tags) across different apps.

Previous efforts which address specific aspects have included OpenSocial (for social data) OpenID (for single sign-on) and OpenSAM (for file system access). This week G.ho.st launched a stack of APIs irreverently called GOSPL (standing for G.ho.st web OS PLatform) and an open directory of web apps. For the user GOSPL aims to allow discovery of web apps and allowing all web apps access the user's files while respecting the user's preferences. For the web developer GOSPL provides a WebDAV complaint user file system and direct access to the G.ho.st user base."

Microsoft changed the "I'm a PC" campaign

Begemot writes "Did anyone notice that Microsoft changed their campaign again? This is how it was (note the "Imagine NO WALLS" at the bottom on the left) and this is how it is now. They didn't rewrite the entire campaign — but this tiny little change must mean something. Also it still looks like MS not just used the tag line "No walls" but actually represent that they have some of the benefits that they don't (including mobility, independence and openness etc.).

Could it be because of the recent G.ho.st vs. Microsoft dispute over the tag line "No walls"? Kara Swisher of "All Things D" was the first to break the news, and then it was picked up by Tom's Hardware, Network World and many others. Funny they changed the campaign just after saying that the G.ho.st claims have no merit.

Some say that the trademark was not registered. OTOH, G.ho.st claims to have the rights for the disputed tag line by the virtue of use. And here's my question — if this would happen to you and your company — would you refuse to be bullied and protect your tag line and go against Microsoft even if your feeble attempt would look like a cheap publicity whoring?"

Microsoft to ditch yet another ad campaign?

Submitted by

Begemot writes "G.ho.st, a startup that offers a hosted operating system, has accused Microsoft of violating a company trademark with its prominent use of the phrase "no walls" in its recently unveiled US$300 million Windows marketing and advertising campaign.

Kara Swisher of "All Things D" was the first to break the news, and then it was picked up by Tom's Hardware, Network World and others.

Some say that the trademark was not registered, but it looks like that G.ho.st has the rights for the disputed tag line by the virtue of use. So should they bring back Seinfeld?"

Can I guess - you have never been to Israel, have you?

1. It's not Israel the country, but a single rather small city within Israel, with their own INDEPENDENT budget
2. As someone already responded, DNA tests are quite cheap, especially in Israel
3. It's just so typically arrogant to assume that you understand better than a the people who decided to do it, a bit of credit man...
4. In Israel we use shekels, not dollars (see #3)

Cheers,
Anton.

Israel + Palestine = (Web) 2.0

Begemot writes "New York Times has a cute article about the first and very ambitious Israeli-Palestinian start-up: G.ho.st. They develop a free, Web-based virtual computer that lets users access their desktop and files from any computer and browser and recently presented it at the All Things D conference. G.ho.st also started moving in the direction of opening its source code to the community and already have their first open source project, called Pixie: http://code.google.com/p/pixie-os/."
