OS/2 and NT are different animals.

Wrong. What became NT was an "advanced projects" branch of OS/2 that Microsoft was developing. It was originally called OS/2 NT. It ended up being very different from mainline OS/2 because Microsoft dropped things like support for 16-bit CPUs very early on, but it's still a fork of OS/2.

The original project to replace Windows's DOS underpinnings was OS/2. The alliance was short-lived, but that doesn't mean it never happened. After the split, Microsoft decided to also call it Windows, leaving the OS/2 trademark to IBM. But trademarks are cheap. Source code lineages are where it's at.

Craig Mason writes "The BBC Reports that "Microsoft has been fined 280.5m euros ($357m; £194m) by the European Commission for failing to comply with an anti-competition ruling. The software giant was hit by the fine following a long-running dispute between the US firm and EU regulators. The move follows a landmark EU ruling in 2004, which ordered Microsoft to provide rivals with information about its Windows operating system. EU regulators also warned Microsoft it could face new fines of 3m euros a day.""

Alranor writes "BumpTop is a new way of manipulating your GUI desktop with a graphics pen. Documents can be moved and piled (among other actions) as if they were real pieces of paper on a physical desktop. Simulated real physical interactions, such as documents pushing others out of the way as you move them around, are intended to increase the intuitiveness of the layout tool. Given the messiness of my desks at work and home, I'm not so sure this will work for me, but it's an interesting idea."
