from the sharks-as-witnesses dept.
A**masher writes "In a test off the Califoria coast late last night, Boeing's Airborne Laser successfully destroyed a sub-launched ballistic missile. 'This was the first directed energy lethal intercept demonstration against a liquid-fuel boosting ballistic missile target from an airborne platform,' reported the Missile Defense Agency. It should be noted that destroying a liquid-fueled ballistic missile is generally considered easier than killing a solid-fueled equivalent due to the relative fragility of the fueling and other systems."

coondoggie writes "NASA is looking to reduce the deadly impact of helicopter crashes on their pilots and passengers with what the agency calls a high-tech honeycomb airbag known as a deployable energy absorber. So in order to test out its technology NASA dropped a small helicopter from a height of 35 feet to see whether its deployable energy absorber, made up of an expandable honeycomb cushion, could handle the stress. The test crash hit the ground at about 54MPH at a 33 degree angle, what NASA called a relatively severe helicopter crash."

Windows 7 Released to Manufacturing

Submitted by BEI01
BEI01 writes "Today, Brandon LeBlanc on The Windows Blog posted:
"I am pleased to announce that Windows 7 has RTM'd!

As I mentioned previously, RTM officially happens only after sign-off occurs. What happens is a build gets designated as a RTM contender after going through significant testing and meeting our quality bar for RTM. Then, it goes though all the validation checks required for RTM including having all languages of that build completed. If all the validation checks have passed — sign-off for RTM can occur. Today after all the validation checks were met, we signed off and declared build 7600 as RTM.""

Starcraft 2 Officially Announced

Submitted by BEI01
BEI01 writes "According IGN, Starcraft 2 has been announced at WWI in Korea. From the article: FMV sequence in a spaceship — looks Terran — zooming in on a metal door — door opening — reveals a guy with a cigar in chains — prisoner — door shuts behind him — there's so much bass the room is shaking — guy steps into some kind of metallic devicce — legs are strapped in — guy rising toward ceiling — Korean text on screen got people very excited — another part of the machine is dropping metal arms on him — machine whirring — applying armor to his torso — extremly detailed visuals here — now guy is strapping on gloves — armor is molding together — seems like a Terran marine — rockets turn on — zerg now onscreen — Marine delivers a line — StarCraft 2 officially announced."
