The cell towers have battery backup in most countries, and I'd be surprised if the US is different.

When there were blackouts in the wake of the 11/3 earthquake in Japan the mobile networks mostly stayed up and the service providers sent solar powered emergency chargers to the worst affected areas. People were naturally desperate to contact their families and friends.

Legal liability. Those who fear being blamed for misuse of their public Wi-Fi signals are said to be protected under a "safe harbor" doctrine akin to that protecting Internet service providers. In other words, they're likely not liable for the mischief of porn purveyors or music pirates.

Sure, you could win in court, but that won't stop you being sent invoices by lawyers looking to make a quick buck, accusing you of downloading porn. I doubt the police will bother to check if you have this service before arresting you on suspicion of downloading child pornography either. You may eventually be found innocent but by that point the damage has already been done.

Tomato seems to be close to death. Only the alpha releases by unknown and unverified forumites support recent hardware that you can still easily buy. Even on the old gear stuff is broken, like channel selection on my ASUS router.

It's a shame because there is a lot to like about Tomato, particular the QoS interface.

The problem is that, just like DNA, the police get lazy and simply round up everyone who matches. Those people can then eliminate themselves from the investigation by providing an alibi. Being arrested tends to look bad though, especially if you are arrested for something particularly nasty. The cops don't give a shit though, they just want an easy life and higher solved rate.

You are looking at just wealth and wages. In terms of the variation between the quality of abode, the standard of healthcare and the life expectancy of the poorest and the richest things have been improving. Thatcher and Regan did a lot of damage but the baseline is still way above where it was 100 years ago.

The problem with PC games is the horrible, horrible DRM. At least with a console's DRM you know what you are getting and it doesn't break the machine. With PC game DRM often you get a rootkit and sometimes your machine doesn't boot after installation. They force you to join some stupid "rockstar social club" and won't let you play if you have DVD duplication software installed.
