Global Software Development Over Unreliable Networ

Submitted by AmIAnAi
AmIAnAi writes "We have two software teams on different continents developing separate products from a common code base. Currently each team has a their own copy of the source code and use CVS for change tracking. These repositories are infrequently synchronised by exchanging copies of the source.

We would like to use a common source repository but network latency and low bandwidth through the VPN makes it impractical to share a CVS repository.

What solutions have others devised for distributed development over unreliable networks. Paying for a premium connection with reduced latency is not an option and the source is owned by a third party, so security is paramount."

Will Wright Predicts the Future with AI

Submitted by AmIAnAi
AmIAnAi writes "In a short interview over at Popular Mechanics, Will Wright makes some predictions about the future of AI and the possible implications for Computer Games. While he does not believe computers will ever achieve human levels of intelligence, he predicts they will begin to model and predict human behavior so that games can adapt the story and setting to the players preferences.

"Computers will recognize the story the player is trying to play out, and up the ante. It will be more like the Truman Show. The computer is in the background, adjusting the environment.""

Snail-speed email

Submitted by AmIAnAi
AmIAnAi writes "Real Snail Mail is an art project using live, RFID equipped snails to transfer email messages between the 'Snail Server' and recipient.

The moment you click 'send' your message will travel at the speed of light to our snail server where it will await collection by a snail agent. [Y]our message will be carried around until the snail chances by the drop off point. Hardware located at this point collects the message from the snail and forwards it to its final destination.
However the service is not currently running at full inefficiency.

For testing purposes some messages may be forwarded sooner than expected. Sorry we can not guarantee unreliability of service at this time. We hope to have RealSnailMail working less predictably as soon as possible.

Could You Have Worked for Edison?

Submitted by AmIAnAi
AmIAnAi writes "In the 1920s, anyone wanting to work as a manager for Thomas A. Edison, Incorporated was required to take a general knowledge test. This test, consisting of 150 questions, was written and personally marked by Edison.

The National Park Service has a article detailing the history of The Edison Mental Fitness Test, including a chance to take a multiple-choice version of the full test or a 30 question sampler.

Most applicants apparently received an 'XYZ' grade, equivalent to today's 'F'. Only 6 percent were "Class A". Edison is quoted as saying:

Men who have gone to college I find to be amazingly ignorant. They don't seem to know anything.

AmIAnAi writes "Just when you thought it was all over, the SCO story takes a new twist.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that SCO have received $100 million financing from Stephen Norris Capital Partners to take tehm out of Chapter 11 and go private.

The move gives Stephen Norris, whose namesake founder was a co-founder of private equity giant The Carlyle Group, a controlling interest in SCO, which now has a platform to continue its court battle with Novell Inc. over royalties from the Unix server operating system, SCO's main business.
