Yahoo Hotjobs won't accept OpenOffice .doc files 2008-01-15 13:02 mwilliamson

Submitted by mwilliamson on Tuesday January 15 2008, @01:02PM
mwilliamson writes "I just submitted the following via Yahoo's HotJobs feedback mechanism. Call me pessimistic, but I suspect this will never be viewed by human eyes. The problem I'm trying to alert Yahoo to is that HotJob's 100kb limitation is blocking the smallest OpenOffice saved .doc files as OpenOffice probably doesn't compress the files the same way.

Here's what I submitted:
The 100kb limit on .doc formatted resumes is preventing those of us who use OpenOffice from being able to upload our .doc resumes as OpenOffice saved .doc files are not compressed in the same manner. Typical short MS-Word files are around 40kb each and short OpenOffice .doc files are just a tad over 100kb each. Please consider changing this limitation to support the open-source community. Additionally, please consider allowing RTF, PDF or even OOXML formats as well."

According to an article on Ars Technica, Warner Music, Universal, and EMI (leaving Sony BMG as the last major holdout) will now be offering their entire music catalogs on Amazon completely DRM-free This move positions Amazon to be a major competitor for iTunes, and could spell the beginning of the end for DRM altogether.

What makes this tourment great though is that you can watch it live for free and enjoy the great studios and commentators. You can also watch past matches from tournament. You don't even have to be an eve player to enjoy watching this great competition. if you have a few hours to kill you'll find watching these battles very fun. Tournament rules are here and current group standings are here."

CCP Closes EVE Official OOG Trading forums[->] 2007-08-21 16:00 Alzheimers

Submitted by Alzheimers on Tuesday August 21 2007, @04:00PM
Alzheimers writes "In a stunning twist of irony, on the heels of CCP announces the hiring of a New Chief Economist for Eve Online, the decision has been made to close their official moderated and enforced market trading forums and with the suggestion to move such activity to an unofficial third party forum.

According to the announcement:
"With the contract system and market in game we have decided to close down the trading forums. They were created as a solution to a problem which is now resolved with the contracts system and it is now time to take all trading back in game. These forums have been locked for new threads but you will be able to finish the current trades. The market forums (Sell Orders, Want Ads and Trades, trades and more trades) will be completely removed on Monday two weeks from now, 2007.09.03, giving everyone enough time to finish existing trades.

Such a move might have been predicated on a possible CCP announcement eliminating the volunteer Forum moderators for a smaller-scale in-house group. Such a move could be to try and reduce the image of past volunteer abuse-of-power scandals but eliminating the trusted forums and forcing everyone to use an unpopular in-game mechanic seems like a huge SOE-like step backwards for what is an otherwise vibrant economic resource."

Autism Reversed at MIT Lab[->] 2007-06-27 12:12 ClayTapes

Submitted by ClayTapes on Wednesday June 27 2007, @12:12PM
It seems that scientists at MIT have been able to reverse the effects of autism and some forms of mental retardation in mice caused by fregile X chromosomes. They do so by targetting an enzyme that changes the structure of connections between brain cells. The treatment actually repairs these structural abnormalities which suggests that it may be possible to reverse the effects in children who already show symptoms. Article here.

In a move that's sure to delight the literally millions of Wii owners out there, Nintendo has announced that it will be offering a development platform which will allow almost anyone to create games that can be downloaded from the Wii Shop Channel. Like Microsoft's XNA Game Studio Express before it, the so called WiiWare service gives at-home developers the tools to create content playable with those magical controllers, meaning that many of the strange and disturbing concept titles we've seen may actually come to fruition starting next year. Since no one wants to sit around coding for free (except for, you know, the entire open source community), Nintendo will allow devs to sell their wares to the public -- "reducing barriers to entry," as the economists say, while giving gamers a potentially endless source of cheap and innovative content. Just remember, Nintendo, when you gift the masses with the power to create, you're definitely not gonna like all of their creations.
