+ - 3d model support comes to MediaGoblin->

Submitted by
paroneayea
paroneayea writes "MediaGoblin and LulzBot have teamed up to bring 3d model support to MediaGoblin! The announcement shows off a live demo of the new feature... it uses Blender on the backend to render stills and thingiview.js to show realtime webgl previews. This means MediaGoblin is becoming more useful for 3d artists and people interested in 3d printing, especially those looking for a free-as-in-freedom alternative to Thingiverse."

Submitted by
caseyb89
caseyb89 writes "Open source projects Nginx, Railo CMS, and GlusterFS are powering Mars Curiosity's big data crunching. "Taken together, the combination of cloud and open source enabled the Curiosity mission to provide beautiful images in real time, not months delayed; at high quality, not "good enough" quality. A traditional, proprietary approach would not have been this successful, given the short time to deployment and shifting requirements that necessitated the ultimate in agility and flexibility.""

+ - The FSF Adapts the Kickstarter Approach to Fund-raising 3

Submitted by ChronoEngineer
ChronoEngineer writes "Recently the Free Software foundation launched a new fund-raising system starting with the GNU Mediagoblin project. Rewards from its new tiered donation reward system include physical objects such as a 3d print of the project's mascot as well as digital ones (Rewards List). This gives free software projects an alternative crowd-funding source where all of their contributions go to advancing free software since the administrative cut taken from the earnings goes to the Free Software Foundation. Chris Webber, of GNU Mediagoblin, mentions this as one of the reasons he chose the FSF over Kickstarter for his project."

GNU Media Goblin 0.3.0 Released 43

Posted by Unknown Lamer
from the zuckerburg-is-goblin-food dept.
A mere year since the Mediagoblin photo/video sharing project was started, the project has hit version 0.3.0. Release highlights include: a rewrite of the database from MongoDB to SQL (via SQLAlchemy, making it much easier to install), audio support (using the HTML5 <audio> tag), a first take on a mobile interface, and smarter video buffering. Not content to sit idle, the developers are starting work on Salmon protocol support to federate with software like Diaspora in the next release.

+ - Director of "Elephants Dream" releasing new Blender-animated film, "Tube"->

Submitted by
TheSilentNumber
TheSilentNumber writes "Bassam Kurdali's free culture 3D animation, "Tube" is nearing the final stages of production. Tube is a collaborative effort between 56 artists from 22 countries...some of which are at war. After directing the first of the Blender Institute's "Open Movie Projects", Elephants Dream, Bassam wanted to prove the viability of free cultural works and usability of free software like Blender and PiTiVi for independent filmmakers. Just a few days after launching a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the project, the goal has been met, which means we should see the final release in 7 months!"

So is the IRC channel empty? Doesn't really matter - if there is a considerable benefit in learning the target language, then someone needs to study that and quantify it.

Maybe I visit it at the wrong time, but even last time, lojbanists were discussing in English something about the newsgroup. Another time, over half of the messages were people asking in English how to translate something into Lojban.
Maybe they just have poor learning methods/tools.

Esperanto has proven itself already

In which way? There are 2 million Esperanto speakers after 120 years (and that's a very generous estimate).

I'm afraid I will say something which may not be a very good argument for learning Esperanto. :>
How short should it take for an "artificial" (bad word for many!) language to become popular after its use has been persecuted or limited by the government for years or tens of years, when most people don't really care about language study if it's advertised heavily?

If Lojban is better (or even easier to learn) then it would be more beneficial to use that.

Even if Lojban is somehow easier to learn, it is probably not easy enough to speak: look at its IRC channel.
