A Lego Replica of the Antikythera Mechanism 74 Screenshot-sm

vbraga writes "The Antikythera Mechanism is the oldest known scientific computer, built in Greece at around 100 BCE. Lost for 2000 years, it was recovered from a shipwreck in 1901. But not until a century later was its purpose understood: an astronomical clock that determines the positions of celestial bodies with extraordinary precision. In 2010, a fully-functional replica out of Lego (YouTube video) was built."

I think a lot of the pool permit/safety issues deal less with the safety of the builder's employees and more with general safety of the pool like the pool has to be surrounded by a fence of certain height with a self locking door so neighbor's toddlers can't chase a ball over and fall in while playing in the backyard, proper wiring of any lighting/circulation systems in the pool ect.

If the parents watched the kid and kept him out of my yard, we wouldn't have this problem. Oh wait, this is America. That means that I have to put up a fence because I am personally responsible for someone else's kid trespassing onto my property.

but IMVHO, you kill someone drunk driving, and that's premeditated murder. Jail. Life.

That totally throws away the meaning of premeditated murder though. Pre-meditated murder means you intentionally killed someone and planned that kill ahead of time.

That's not what happened in your hypothetical case. The reality is you acted like an irresponsible dick and got someone killed. We already SPECIFICALLY DEFINED a term for that crime, and it's manslaughter. Truly accidental killings where you were at no fault aren't criminal. The manslaughter crime is for when you did it through a negligent or irresponsible action. Specifically if there's not specific INTENTION to kill someone, then it's not murder. If you were taking pot shots with that Glock in your back yard and a stray bullet hit a car (and killed someone) on a street behind your house that would still just be manslaughter, as you weren't intentionally trying to kill someone.

If you think that manslaughter should be punished more harshly, then I'm fine with that, but the reality is it's a dangerous game to start to apply legal definitions outside of their actual scope just because you think someone deserves a harsher sentence.

Indeed. If drinking and driving is premandated murder (AKA First Degree Murder) than drinking is the premeditation. Vis-a-vis, drinking is attempted first degree murder.

All games go through battle.net so that your progress can be monitored, stats updated, etc. You call it DRM, I call it stat tracking. Living in a home with several SC2ers, we've already confirmed that if play a game with all people in your LAN, it will be hosted on your LAN, but you'll still need a connection.

Dubbed Ikaros for interplanetary kite-craft accelerated by radiation of the sun, it hopes to be a forerunner for another solar sail powered vehicle to Jupiter later this decade.

I thought 2010 was supposed to be the year we made contact with Jupiter, but I can settle for 2020."

Hugh Pickens writes "The Raw Story reports that terrorists who want to overthrow the United States government must now register with South Carolina's Secretary of State and declare their intentions — or face a $25,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison. The 'Subversive Activities Registration Act' passed last year in South Carolina and now officially on the books states that 'every member of a subversive organization, or an organization subject to foreign control, every foreign agent and every person who advocates, teaches, advises or practices the duty, necessity or propriety of controlling, conducting, seizing or overthrowing the government of the United States ... shall register with the Secretary of State.'"

Also, please stop using "African American". This is nonsense. How would you call black people from other countries? Just name it like it is: "Black Americans". Some African Americans are white, so your description is not good enough.

But by making them seperate, we make them equal, right!?

Great minds run in great circles.
