I don't play EVE-O.
I'd like to, it looks good; leveling up looks better than other MMORPGs.
I'm not even that interested in the RPG part... I've been having fun with capitol ship fighting in megamek recently (and I dug out Homeworld to play again a couple of weeks ago).

I've read here about one needing to be logged in when a skill update happens or it's wasted,,,
This is wrong... If it's progressed, you should get it.

My idea for EVE-off-line would include some kind of tamogatchi-type thingamajigger... something you synched up via USB with a few simple games on it to play, that would then be authenticated and uploaded, helping you when online.

The problem is some people really believe that if you take in certain pieces of information, you WILL act on it
You have no choice, it's not a question of self-control; sooner or later, you will do something.
(Strangely enough, these kind of people usually talk big about "personal responsibility"... although it's usually in terms of punishment, rarely in terms of prevention.)
The fact that you deny it will happen is proof that you've been corrupted, your conscience seared, and reinforces their belief in their own rightness.
That consuming that information might actually prevent someone from going out and committing the act depicted/described, is something entirely alien, and will cause them to redouble their belief against it.

Whether it's porn of any type, birth control, evolution, video games, political theories,,, hell, damned near anything, someone with this mode of thought will crusade against it. And again, trying to cure them of it only makes them dig in deeper.

Of course, the inquisitors, err... special investigators, are somehow immune to this effect, and are there to save you from your sins.

Submission + - Restrictions planned on fertilizer sales

An anonymous reader writes: Everyone's favorite fertilizer- ammonium nitrate- is bound for more paperwork and restrictions if the DHS has its way. No more chemical cold packs, and the stuff used on your lawn will get more pricey- along with fruits and vegetables- due to planned restrictions on transactions involving any quantity of AN. Last date for comments is Monday, December 29th.

XBMC Running On an Atom-Based MID 97

reborn writes "Someone's got XBMC running on one of those MIDs. This one is a Compal Jax10. It runs Linux and is powered by an Intel Atom processor clocked at 800Mhz along with Intel's GMA500, which is basically a licensed PowerVR SGX GPU. Except for the better GPU (and its screen and keyboard, of course), it is similarly specced as some of the lower-end netbooks. XBMC would make a great portable media player, given its ability to play media off the network and virtually all file formats, but in the end it depends on the price-point of these MIDs. Here's the video."

DON'T!!!

I've done some tech support for people in my mother's building (and since then, re-affirmed my oath to NOT FUCKING do that ever again!),
You may as well surf all the virus/trojan loaded sites before you give it to them and save them the trouble.
And save yourself the trouble of having to explain why all their pictures are gone, or why they're victims of ID theft and not able to do anything about it.

Many people are going to shout "UBUNTU!!! They can just do the updates themselves."
Yeah, and then you're gonna be over there figuring out what happened when they do a version upgrade and it not just breaks, but shatters to pieces.

I got my mom a mini-mac. The only issues I've had to fix are getting an old version of photoshop running on it, and telling her that "no, you don't have to pay for Open Office, that's a donation button, like on PBS."

Disclaimers: I use ubuntu on my systems; no problems, I like it. I am not a mac fanboi. I know not every senior is technically inept; I've seen plenty who do amazing things on their systems, I've also seen some who shouldn't be allowed to own a toaster.

Submission + - Roku STB Adds HD, Grows Beyond Netflix (deviceguru.com)

__aajbyc7391 writes: Roku has announced two free updates to its Internet-enabled Netflix movie-streaming set-top box. The initial update adds advanced compression capable of streaming HD video over average consumer broadband connections, while the second (expected during the first quarter of 2009) will add A/V streaming from sources other than Netflix (e.g. YouTube, Hulu, Comedy Central, MSNBC, etc.). Roku faces growing competition from other providers of Internet-based video-on-demand (VOD) STBs, such as Blockbuster's STB, Syabas's Popcorn Hour (aka NMT), AppleTV, and others. Roku hasn't said anything specific, but perhaps it'll partner with Boxee, which already provides a popular AppleTV hack.

Java, Where To Start? 558

I'm a web developer who has design and programming experience. So, VB, ASP, PHP, Coldfusion, Perl, even C and C++ I have in my belt. I also use Dreamweaver and/or do a lot of my HTML/XHTML/JavaScript coding by hand. So, the DOM, DHTML, etc, all good to me and even OOP thinking and design I have when I code. And I even have MySQL and other databases, again, not an issue here. So, my weak point is — Java — I see so many jobs out there with J2EE, Hibernate, Eclipse, Netbeans. Beside the obvious, which is to learn Java the core language, I don't know where else to go from there. There is so much! What should I read? in what order? What software do I require? UML? Swing? I mean, what is the curriculum required for someone to say they are a solid Java developer? Even assuming I have to go through Java itself, what are the good books out there?
