In Arizona, for example, where I'm currently going to school, the government repeatedly made tax cuts to "help the economy" and is now going bankrupt in a huge shocker. This state is loaded with wealthy people, yet it's somehow on the brink of not being able to pay for basic social services. The public school system here is basically going down the tubes so the rich can keep from paying too much taxes and become even more disparately wealthy.

This is why I've been using chrome as my primary browser lately, no add-ons so far. I switch my relatives and friends as well. It's like the OS X of browsers. Constantly disabling add-ons that other programs conveniently installed for them is really annoying. It's like cleaning out the windows malware their PCs always manage to accumulate. Just a few days ago I dealt with a PC that was running incredibly slow, a few seconds of lag for each letter typed. A quick look at the process list and I see firefox is using 99% cpu. I take a look at the add-ons and disable an add-on winamp snuck in and problem solved. Who knows what the winamp addon was doing, but it's really fucking annoying.

Engineered Bacteria Glows To Reveal Land Mines 248

MikeChino writes "Sifting through minefields to remove hidden threats is a dangerous, tedious, and expensive process. Scientists at the University of Edinburgh recently announced that they have engineered a strain of bacteria that glows green in the presence of explosives, making mine detection a snap. The new strain of bacteria can be sprayed onto local affected areas or air-dropped over entire fields of mines. Within a few hours the bacteria strain begins to glow wherever traces of explosive chemicals are present."

It doesn't. This, like most IT books, is just going to be a lot of copy/pasting from the online documentation and a list of what modules to install. There's handfuls of Drupal modules that are pretty much must-have for most sites that cover this kind of 'missing' functionality. Each major release of Drupal incorporates more and more of them into the core download, but it's really not that hard to untar a couple extra modules each time.

Film Studios May Block DVD Rentals For One Month 545

Ponca City, We love you writes "The LA Times reports that in an effort to push consumers toward buying more movies, some major film studios are considering a new policy that would block DVDs from being offered for rental until several weeks after going on sale. Under the plan, new DVD releases would be available on a purchase-only basis for a few weeks, after which time companies such as Blockbuster and Netflix would be allowed to rent the DVDs to their customers. 'The studios are wrestling with declines in DVD sales while the DVD rental market has been modestly growing,' says Reed Hastings the CEO of Netflix. 'If we can agree on low-enough pricing, delayed rental could potentially increase profits for everyone.' Three studios have already tried to impose a no-rental period of about a month on Redbox, the operator of kiosks that rent movies for $1 per night, believing that Redbox's steeply discounted price undercuts DVD sales. Redbox has responded by suing the studios, seeking to force them to sell it DVDs simultaneously with competitors. Meanwhile, the company is stocking its kiosks with DVDs it can't otherwise obtain by buying them from retailers."

First Look At Acer's 3D Laptop 151

Barence writes "Acer today revealed the world’s first 3D laptop, the Acer Aspire 5738PG, which will launch alongside Windows 7 on October 22. It uses a combination of software and specially coated glass on the 15.4in screen, along with a standard set of polarised glasses. Initial impressions were a bit iffy, and whether anyone actually needs a 3D laptop is another question entirely, but we'll find out this month."
