Comment Learn to Golf (Score 1) 361

Golf is the sport of business. I've meet more people outside my range, CEO's, Presidents, VP's, etc. because I'm a good golfer. It's about getting face time with them and becoming comfortable speaking with them. The more you do it the better you become. They also start to see you as a 'real' person and not one of the 'computer guys'.

Delphi has been around since before Win95. Delphi was incredible popular and allowed all us Clipper developers a way into Windows development when CA dropped the ball with Visual Objects. Remember, Anders Hejlsberg created Delphi before C#. It is still very popular in most other countries besides here in the US. The choice of Delphi doesn't surprise me. Even though my company is mainly C#, etc. now, we still have a few old Delphi 7.0 and Delphi.NET applications running. In fact, I was just making a change to one before I read this article.

Comment My then-60 year old father learned metric system. (Score 1) 909

Back in the 1990's my father's factory, they made train parts, was bought out by a German firm. After a while all measurements had to be done in metric. They had special classes to teach these men, most 40+ year old with high school educations at best the metric system. He said once you allowed yourself to change how you thought, it was no big deal. This was from a man that only finished high school because his parents wouldn't sign the paperwork for him to enter the USMC before he was 18! He's close to 80 today and still uses metric for most of his work around the house. I always felt if someone like him could be converted then anyone can learn and use the metric system.

Didn't really know what part of Conn. they moved to recently. Last my wife heard from her was EVERYTHING is in lock down. Her children would be middle school age so probably not at that school but she can't contact them and hasn't seen them yet. (As of 2 hrs ago.) Cannot image how this must feel as a parent. Just, so, so sad.

Comment Iron Dome has been Active for 2 Year now... (Score 1) 861

It's just intercepted more missiles in the last week then the previous 2 years combine. Since there are only 4 Iron Dome Batteries operational, with a 5th that just came on line 11/17/2012, and 2 more scheduled for 2013, I always thought Hamas could overwhelm Iron Dome. It seems Hamas has tried that but Israel UAV's have been able to spot these attempts and that's where the IAF comes in. They are able to use their Air Power to bomb these attempts before any missiles are launched. Each Iron Dome Battery cost around $37million US Dollars with the Tamir missiles around $40,000 each. I feel this has just been a test by Hamas to see the capabilities of Iron Dome. They probably realized they lost this round days ago but are unable to stop now without loosing face. (A very important point in the Arab world.) A truce will be worked out and Hamas will re-evaluate where they must be in 2, 5, 10 years from now before they can attempt a successful attack. Of course Israel won't sit still during that time. All just very, very sad.

Comment Dairy farms have been doing this for years. (Score 1) 432

The dairy farm behind my house, it's about an 7 iron shot to one of the barns, has been doing this for years. When my children were young, they are 22 and 18 now, the would come back with bags of pez candy. They would tell me stories of the 'Pez Mountain' at the farm. I didn't really believe it until I saw it for myself. A 10 foot tall pile of Pez. They would mix it in with the feed. They would also purchase day old bread, doughnuts, etc. and also mix it with the fee.

I interviewed with a consulting company. After 3 interviews, tech exam, etc. the final thing they wanted me to do was go to one of their client's sites and do something. (Don't remember exactly what now.) I respectfully declined to go to one of their customers. That was the last I heard from that company.
