Comment Replicator benefit everyone forgets about: waste (Score 1) 633

Think about the implications for a moment. What ever left over food you have can be "dematerialized". The resources used to create an object can be recaptured and conserved when you dematerialize it. Its like the ultimate way to recycle! No more landfills! No more pollution from producing a widget or burning fossil fuel to deliver it.
I didn't think about it until I watched a Voyager episode. The one where Chakotay gives Janeway an old time piece and she gives it back to conserve "resources". The scene kind of clues you in to the fact that its not an unlimited resource, but definitely a world changer.

Comment Drop in the bucket - I second that (Score 1) 688

Ask yourself this question, How many different resources did the US discover and exploit between 1776 (the birth of the nation) and 1902 (discovery of the oil in Texas and CA)? Compare the answer to what Afghanistan has recently discovered and that $1 trillion now looks like a drop in the bucket. Not for nothing, I always thought the only viable industrys for Afghan were opium and war. So from my perspective this is good news.

Comment where do College test subjects come from? (Score 1) 32

Answer: from the vicinity of the campus area. And who answers those ads posted in and around the campus asking for test subjects? The majority are college students. This is why I take these results of university research with a grain of salt. The sample population is not a general enough sample (similarities in age, culture, religious preferences etc). The researchers operate not only with limited resources but also with constraints in time. Time for finding subjects, calling them back regarding followup interviews, etc.

Have you ever tried the Flash10 based online Audiotool http://www.hobnox.com/audiotool/. It will only load on a system with 1GB or more of Ram and a CPU of 2Ghz minimum. Try it on a system with less and watch your system slow to a crawl. Its a great tool and a haven for old school DJs who dreamed of using that equipment back in the day. If audiotool could be re-worked using HTML5, that would the ultimate hack that deserves an award!

Honda Makes Nanotube Breakthrough 88

SkinnyGuy writes "Carbon nanofibers and nanotubes are the future of computers, cars, energy and more, but it won't happen until someone figures out how to make carbon nanotubes more efficiently and in formations that can deliver enough energy and functionality to offer practical solutions for real-world problems. Honda's latest breakthrough could be the first step. Of course, Intel is working on similar carbon nanotube fabrication technology. Whoever finally delivers a practical solution, it sounds like a win-win for us."

"Focused Ultrasound" is a medical term every one should know, along with chemo, stroke, diet, pregency. Its a technology easier and much less invasive than surgery. I wonder if Health Insurance companies would disapprove this treatment because of cost? Thanks for the link. If I had MOD points I would have modded you to a Five.

The case of Apple vs Microsoft comes to mind. It lasted ten years until Apple decided to accept a settlement for an undisclosed amount. That was during the time Microsoft was at its peak. What is Psystar really trying to do? Do they think they have snowball chance in hell of some success? Are there any lawyers in the house, cause this topic is too far fetched to be believable.

New State of Matter Could Extend Moore's Law 329

rennerik writes "Scientists at McGill University in Montreal say they've discovered a new state of matter that could help extend Moore's Law and allow for the fabrication of more tightly packed transistors, or a new kind of transistor altogether. The researchers call the new state of matter 'a quasi-three-dimensional electron crystal.' It was discovered using a device cooled to a temperature about 100 times colder than intergalactic space, following the application of the most powerful continuous magnetic field on Earth."

Submission + - Has JAVA reached a turning point?

proto writes: "Many significant changes have taken place between the Linux 2.4 and 2.6 kernel. In comparing milestones, what important milestones has JAVA reached this year? The open source version is still being reviewed and the benefits of its use will not be known for a few months. What important feature or features does JAVA have now that it did not have before being opened sourced?"
