I use AVG8 Free fairly stripped down but this hasn't happened to me. Did you install SafeSurf/SafeSearch? I found those features useless and annoying you couldn't deselect them at install.

/REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch as a command switch to the installer will remove those two features.

I'll agree that AVG8 Free by default is pretty annoying and memory hog-ish, but if you get rid of the silly Internet Security features you're left with a reasonable on-access scanner with a UI better than Avast!'s IMO.

samwire writes: Not sure how widely it's been picked up, but I noticed that the OpenDocument Foundation's site has had a small note quietly appended. 'Note: All work on ODF da Vinci has ended. Without OASIS approval of our five generic eXtensions, known as the iX enhancements, we can not effectively convert existing Microsoft documents, applications and processes to ODF. The loss of fidelity and feature — business process specific information is too great. We are however able to make full, high fidelity "round trip" conversions to the W3C's CDF — meeting critical market requirements. If at some point in the future, the OASIS ODF TC does approve both our ODF iX enhancements, and, our "Universal Interoperability Framework Proposal", we will configure da Vinci to support both CDF and ODF iX.' Given this was the only MS Office plugin that was claimed would eventually provide a 100% perfect 'round trip' conversion fidelity, this sounds like a significant blow for ODF interoperability with MS Office.

coondoggie writes: "Former DoD civilian employee and former member of the California Army National Guard, Jesse Lane Jr today pleaded guilty to defrauding the United States and conspiring with four other individuals to do the same, by accessing a government computer to set up thousands of dollars in fraudulent payments. Lane faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison for conspiracy, 20 years in prison for honest services wire fraud, and three years of supervised release. Sentencing was set for Sept. 24, 2007."

rdd writes: The New York Post has a story on a possible takeover of Yahoo by Microsoft. It comes in the wake of the Google / Doubleclick deal that has probably caused some concern within Microsoft. A takeover of Yahoo could provide them with a better position in many areas they are currently behind in. Yahoo includes strong internet names like Flickr and a healthy advertising section. They are also developing web-based office applications that could be pitted against Googles Docs & Spreadsheets.

An anonymous reader writes: Now I am a fan of Google like the rest of us, but recently I have noticed something disturbing about news.google.ca (as I am sure is probably the same with news.google.com as well). Each time you click on a link, it would appear that some javascript alter's the original URL of the news article from say www.example.com/story.htm to a URL which goes through google servers first and then redirect's you to the original site. Is it just me, or is this not a privacy nightmare that few people have noticed?

A public consultation revealed an overwhelming opposition to the use of digital rights management which is currently limited to Microsoft Windows.

Triple Sec writes: Tech that could put the keyboard and mouse out of service has surfaced in Britain. According to silicon.com, BT has demoed a USB-based device that enables a user to manipulate a tablet PC or laptop to 'move the cursor, view maps, surf the net or turn the pages of a digital book'. The motion-sensitive device apparently works in a similar way to the Nintendo Wii controllers.
