Comment Planning and preparation (Score 1) 264

I think this is a great idea. Not only should we come up with good theories, we should test the best one on an asteroid that is relatively close, and have the necessary preparations done for a future quick-launch mission in case this ever does happen.

Because, after all, the amount of time between when we hear about an asteroid on a collision course and when it would actually hit the planet is likely to be a LOT less than the amount of time it would take to ready a space mission (or build a special rocket, or borrow China's anti-satellite laser!)

Valve Announces Dota 2 128

RulerOf writes "Just over a year after hiring IceFrog, the lead developer of the wildly popular DotA Allstars mod for Warcraft III, and the speculation surrounding Valve's recent trademark filing for the 'DotA' name, Valve has officially announced Dota 2. Gameplay of Dota 2 is being ported 'exactly' from the current DotA Allstars and includes every hero, but vast improvements are being made to the game including VoIP, a coaching system, in-game rewards, and AI that takes over for disconnected players. Lastly, it all runs on top of the Source engine. (GameInformer's website appears to be struggling right now though, as they had an exclusive on this story.)"

Comment Password authentication is dumb (Score 5, Insightful) 427

So, what, we're supposed to have a different password with special characters and nothing significant to us (like dates) for each of the 150 online accounts we have? Oh, and if we write down the passwords somewhere so we don't forget them we're dumb too? Whatever! Maybe if we all had photographic memories that would be a realistic options, but there's just no way it's going to happen like that.

It's just a crappy system, we should be using public key encryption with our private keys stored on a USB key - or some other similar scheme, where we don't have to memorize a million randomized passwords in order to not have our identity stolen.

Mirasol? Really? A technology that's not even on the market yet? Why not go with the already available and commercially viable pixel qi screen tech? It' the best of both worlds, a dual mode screen for indoor and outdoor use! And you can already get one! Just add touch-screen capabilities and you have the perfect tablet.

Actually, if you're going to store them for a long time (years) without running them, you'll probably need to keep them cold.

I hear (from someone that kept HD's on a shelf for years) that the oil will run out of the bearings if the drives are left sitting for years, causing the platters to freeze up when they were turned on.

Admittedly, this is old information, and who knows what the new drives do (maybe they have better seals?) and I'm not even sure that keeping them cold will help, spinning up the platters for 15 minutes once a week might work too.

The motions the game wants? I don't know what you saw, but I saw a guy holding some device, not some medieval wrist wrangling torture machine twisting his arm behind his back until he begs for mercy.

I just tried the pointing and rotating thing with my wrist, it felt fine, no stress at all - you might want to go visit an orthopedic doctor and get your joint problems looked at ;)

Also, think of the awesome light-saber battles you could have with this thing!

I don't believe you have to point a remote at anything for this to work.

Since it sounds like you don't want to give up your mouse, you could probably use this device as a mouse if you wanted to, and limit it to a 2d plane - then when something calls for it, you pick up the controller and use it to detect motion in 3D.

Comment Head Tracking Dream Machine!! (Score 1) 187

Am I the only one that saw this an immediately thought this would be perfect for head tracking and full immersion software?! This is EXACTLY what I have been waiting, *especially* if you can use multiple devices! 2 would be perfect for an FPS, one for the hand and one for the head - then you just add in a set of those "personal theater" eyeglasses with two inputs instead of one an you can add stereoscopic vision to the package! Seems like we're just a year away from a pretty ideal full-immersion home gaming system!
