Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, laptop would regularly take 10-15 minutes to restart or shutdown, the fingerprint reader locked me on the login screen in a way that I couldn't even login using my password so had to restart with the power button, the hard disk and processor usage when the system was idle would suddenly jump to 90%+ for extended periods of time (especially problematic if on battery), WiDi dropped dead and several other 'improvements'.

After restarting the laptop for a gazillion times (which took 10 to 15 minutes each), I managed to update all the drivers but sadly WiDi and the fingerprint reader were still not working and the disk and processor usage would still jump to around 90%+ if the system was left idle for around a minute so I've had to switch off any form of background maintenance tasks the OS might perform.

I must admin though, despite thousands of posts in forums, HP and MS support staff are still extremely polite and paste the same solution in response to pretty much every problem: "run teh virus scanner and if there are any viruses, remove them", if no viruses are found and the person seeking support is persistent enough: "Update teh drivers", updated drivers: "... ... ... [crickets]", so much better than the OPs experience

You have one giant South Korean buerocracy, where they have to compete within the company for the CEO/Board's attention/funding against the companies big money maker.

Surely, when you want to know how much it costs to drive a car, you want to include gas and maintenance, right? Insurance and parking costs. Even the cost of traffic tickets.

The Council on Foreign Relations, who likes wars, tried to minimize the cost of the war just to the line items in the budget. It's worth having a more realistic estimate.

Military budgets were higher as a result of Iraq and Afghanistan, but you'd have to count the entire military budget as "war costs" to reach even $4T, much less $6T.

Well, it adds up pretty fast when you look at the lost productivity of the men and women who went to fight and the fact that now we're on the hook for a lifetime of medical care for every single one of them, plus other benefits, and a lot of them came back very broken, with pieces missing and will require expensive medical care for the rest of their lives.

My point was not that the products actually do last more than a year. My point is that sleazy Apple purposely borks their old hardware with updates so you have to buy a new gadget.

The notion that the best we can hope for, paying $900 for an iPhone 5 (64gig) is that it last 12 months is absurd. And you're saying, "Well, what do you expect?"

I've never seen a hard drive last more than a couple of years

I've got a hard drive sitting here that's pretty old. I converted it to an external drive after replacing it with newer ones in my computer.
