Submission + - Update for Microsoft office designed to notify you

homey of my owney writes: "An update offered for Microsoft Office and flagged an important, seeks to help you know if you are using an improperly licensed version of Microsoft Office. That may be helpful for some, but it seems that the provisions to download further updates without permission, that the functionality of the software may be affected, and their intent to collect your Microsoft Office product key, IP address, hard drive serial number, PC manufacturer, and PC BIOS information — might not be what the user was expecting. The full text is below.

Submission + - Internet Hardware for White-Space Spectrum?

g2 in the desert writes: I live in a small rural community in the US Southwest, where broadband service varies from decent but very expensive, to lousy but less expensive.

Now that the Federal Communications Commission has approved the use of the soon to be vacated White-Space Spectrum, I'm interested in helping the community build its own local Internet service, providing villagers another choice. Does anyone know what companies will be manufacturing hardware that will be required to utilize this spectrum, and what steps need to be taken in order to be in compliance with any FCC rules and regulations?

Submission + - No Taste Buds for you!!

homey of my owney writes: The NY Times has a story today on a very interesting use of intellectual Property law.

"A lawsuit by the owner of Pearl Oyster Bar in Manhattan may be the most aggressive use of intellectual property concepts by the owner of a small restaurant.

The suit, which seeks unspecified financial damages from Ed McFarland, chef and co-owner and the restaurant itself, charges that Ed's Lobster Bar copies "each and every element" of Pearl Oyster Bar, including the white marble bar, the gray paint on the wainscoting, the chairs and bar stools with their wheat-straw backs, the packets of oyster crackers placed at each table setting and the dressing on the Caesar salad."

Wow, that's some tasty IP.
