Why not try the blind test and find out for yourself? If it's too tiring for you, you can always break it into separate sessions. By the way, your friend's MP3 player could well have been playing Xin-encoded 128kbps MP3s - that's not what we are talking about here. Try comparing a decent lossy encode to the equivalent FLAC.
