Comment Re:Open Source the server code! or possibly the ga (Score 3, Interesting) 91

Actually, the game assets were put into escrow as assets against investment from other companies. I don't remember if this "Redbana" is the investor, but there's someone that is interested and has a claim against the assets. So, no open sourcing for this game.

There is a bit of precedent for something like this. Blender came to be in a similar situation. When the company failed, their creditors agreed to open source it for a payment of around $100000, which was met by community donations. Now, I doubt that Hellgate: London could get the same level of donations that Blender did, but if the company is looking at a total loss they could possibly be persuaded to let it go relatively cheaply.

Submission + - OpenDisc launched (ccg.id.au)

ChrisGray writes: "The OpenDisc project is a collection of high quality open source software aimed at Microsoft Windows users, regularly updated and freely distributable as a CD. It saves them money on otherwise costly proprietary software, but more importantly promotes Linux uptake amongst users who may have not been exposed to OSS before. I started the project after eighteen months spent as Project Lead for Canonical's TheOpenCD, during which I found numerous problems impeding further development, which I've expanded on at length on my blog. The latest version is available at SourceForge."

Submission + - Hackers Cause Generator to Self-Destruct

An anonymous reader writes: It has been revealed that in a U.S. Department of Homeland Security exercise codenamed "Aurora" conducted in March of this year, researchers were able to cause a power generator to self destruct remotely via a "cyber attack" which changed the operating cycle of the generator. "Government sources said changes are being made to both computer software and physical hardware to protect power generating equipment."

Similar to the system in London — If the program is fully financed, it will include not only license plate readers but also 3,000 public and private security cameras below Canal Street, as well as a center staffed by the police and private security officers, and movable roadblocks"

Submission + - Evolution without gene changes: Evo-devo

zoefff writes: NY times has a fascinating article about 'evo-devo': evolution not through the alteration of genes, but through the alteration of the processing of genes during growth. All with master genes commanding a hierarchy of other genes, revisiting Darwin's finches and providing an explanation for mimicry.
From the article: '
New forms can arise via new uses of existing genes, in particular the control genes or what are sometimes called toolkit genes that oversee development. It is a discovery that can explain much that has previously been mysterious, like the observation that without much obvious change to the genome over all, one can get fairly radical changes in form.'

Submission + - Hiper HPU-4M730-SS Type M 730W PSU (benchmarkreviews.com)

Benchmark Reviews writes: "The new generation of power supplies has begun to amp up the competition for placement in your computer case. Antec's EarthWatts series was among the first to cause a stir in the PSU industry by emphasizing efficient power delivery over the multi-rail hype. But now 80% or better efficiency is very common. A perfect example of combining high-power wattage, efficiency, and good looks can be found in the Hiper HPU-4M730-SS Type M 730W PSU. The four +12V rails offer regulated power distribution, but they also deliver at least 80% of the power that they promise, which will result in a more efficient system. Hiper's Type M PSU claims to support dual and quad processors, dual (SLi and CrossFire) graphics card sets, and just about anything else you can throw at it, but Benchmark Reviews will load test the DC voltage regulation and ripple just to be sure.

Submission + - Judge Orders FBI to Release Abuse Records (lawbean.com)

Spamicles writes: "A judge has ordered the FBI to release agency records about its abuse of National Security Letters (NSLs) to collect Americans' personal information. The ruling came just a day after the EFF urged the judge to immediately respond in its lawsuit over agency delays. This is the same case in which an internal FBI audit found that the bureau potentially violated the law or agency rules more than 1,000 times while collecting data about domestic phone calls, e-mails and financial transactions in recent years."

An anonymous reader writes: After years of Daniel Brandt lobbying Wikipedia for it's removal, Brandt's biography page has been removed from Wikipedia, leaving behind a redirect to one of his projects, NameBase. The decision came after the 14th discussion of the article and partly in response to stricter policies on dealing with living people.

Brandt lobbies for the accountability of online organizations through his Wikipedia Watch, Google Watch and Yahoo Watch websites.

Submission + - "John Doe" ISP wins civil liberties award (pressesc.com)

amigoro writes: "Here's irony for you: A president of a New York Internet Service Provider (ISP) who stood up against the Patriot Act and refused to violate the privacy of his clients has won a top civil liberties award, but the recipient cannot be named because of FBI gag orders. An anonymous ISP legally challenged the NSL statute after the FBI demanded personal information on costumers using the statute, and the judge ruled that NSL violates First amendment rights. But the FBI's gag order on the ISP is still in place."

Submission + - Man versus Machine poker challenge (ualberta.ca)

awesomo2001 writes: "An AI team from the University of Alberta has challenged two top-level professional poker players to play Texas hold 'em against their intelligent software Polaris for the prize of $50,000 and bragging rights.

The competition will consist of four 500-hand duplicate matches. In each duplicate match, the same series of cards will be dealt in two parallel Man versus Machine matches, with teammates playing the opposite hands in each game. At the end of the match, the total number of chips won or lost by each team is added together to determine the winning team. This format is used to reduce the element of random luck to a minimum, and get a much better indication of the differences in skill."
Polaris has been developed by the same people who have created the first and only Checkers playing computer program to have won a human championship. The match will take place in Vancouver, Canada, at the end of July during the AAAI 2007 conference."
