Why are there only jobs on the coast?

I think this is the real root of the problem. Everybody wants to cram into (for example) Silicon Valley - because it's where the best paying, most stable jobs are. Why can't these employers employ workers elsewhere. I've actually worked for a company that tried that tactic. Guess what? During hard times, (or mergers), they tend to shut remote sites down, and the workers are laid off or uprooted.

But yeah - a lot of problems would be resolved if employment were more distributed.

It's not quite nothing--he did retweet it to give it some attention--but I thought it was iffy myself, and I am certainly no fan of Assange. I keep him on one of my Twitter lists just because his delusions amuse me (and because he sometimes posts something interesting). When something this unusual pops up, it's best to look into it a bit further.

Off-topic side note about WalMart. I've done data cable work at more than a few and found that they do one really neat trick when they build: For their main electrical room they haul in a 40' container (before the walls are up) and set it in the back of the store. All the electrical mains come in there through a wall. All the main breakers and the telco demarcation point is in there so if they catch fire the rest of the store has a chance. Off-topic but kind of cool if you're into that thing, which I am.

Largely because of the first-sale doctrine, which codifies property rights sanity: if you sell me something, it is now mine, not yours. I can do whatever I want with it. Use my spatula as a screwdriver? Use a thermos bottle for a hammer? Watch scenes in a movie out of order? It's none of your business. I bought it. It is now my property, and I'm free to do with it as I please.

Good solution. I do like my pure 480GB SSD in my work laptop for the battery savings. I get 6 hours out of an i5 laptop now. It's an HP Elitebook 840 if you're interested. For pure storage I have a 2TB USB3 drive that holds things like music, software packages and all the found Doctor Who episodes, just in case, ya know.

Blame ASCII. There is no standard (7-bit) ASCII symbol for cents. Back in my day we use to just type a c and then backspace and type a / to make the US cents symbol. Of course, back then most typewriters didn't have a numeral 1 and we just used a lower case L for that.

The lack of cent and degree symbols always bothered me when it comes to the ASCII set. Before all you internationalists get upset about including a US centric symbol, remember that the A in ASCII stands for American.

I use sentences of my own creation. In the case of mandatory password changes, I will sometimes use some piece of trivia. For example, I might use the counties of a state. It reduces the entropy somewhat, especially if someone finds out what the reference is, but it allows me some room to work and embeds a new bit of trivia into my head.

I do use password managers (a couple of them, actually), and I know there are some enterprise password managers out there. There's a danger to stand-alone managers, but a well-managed enterprise should have all of the core passwords securely stored somewhere.

That being said it should be mentioned that a variant of TFTP (35years old) is the standard for Loading SW onto parts in Planes.

I've had to buy up old Win95 Toughbooks for our engineers so they can load the cabin lighting into a Boeing 747. There's a place in the plane that takes a 3.5" floppy with the settings. The only program that writes that disk needs to run on Win98 or below and won't work with a USB floppy. Just bought three more that came out of cop cars in Iowa.

OK, OK. I'll double-check with a calculator that's not "bc" before publishing. I've done enough physics work, though, to trust that 1) calculations showing explicit conversions are almost always correct, and 2) calculations that don't almost never are.

Like when Bell Labs developed C to write Unix? There's a long tradition of major companies coming up with new languages to scratch an itch. Thank God is hasn't died. How boring to live in a time when we'd decided that there was nothing left to innovate?
