Submission + - Asking Slashdot for ideas to help Fix online Security in Business (cnet.com)

WeeBit writes: You can't get through the week without hearing about a business that was compromised. I don't have all of the answers and because this is such a large task I am not sure if any one person would be able to solve it.

My own idea is to solve it at the server or workstation before the data leaves and travels over the Internet. Which means certain data would never been seen because the computer calling the data is either not local, or is not showing the right computer name, similar etc. But they can still call up certain data, but only be permitted to the data perhaps in a a certain size allocated. Basically only local has access to large chunks, or multiple users. I believe this would have to be programmed and there would be different types to handle different type of businesses. Or work in the same manner as like maybe an anti-virus software does, or firewall. Checking to see what computer is asking for the data etc.

I am not saying this will work, I am just saying that over the past years many have said it needs to be secure and having the general public to secure their own personal information will not work in a society that allows anyone to store your personal information. Banks, Healthcare, credit cards, your personal information is everywhere. So I believe the fix is in the Servers and workstations on how they handle this personal information.

Ideas?

Submission + - I need suggestions - video editor 1

WeeBit writes: I need a video editor that has the following:
add voice, music, or both -unlimited
include pictures, video, slideshows, file presentations
be able to add credits, title, and if necessary text before during or after video, slideshows, pictures
not cost an arm and a leg I am on a budget of less than 150 bucks here.
be able to upload to YouTube or my website, or my blog which is WordPress.
nice transitions, video effects would be a plus.
use for commercial — non commercial

I have used a few as a test run but many lack one or two things above. The one I thought was promising didn't handle sound very well on my box which is windows 7. That was Windows live movie maker. Even using the fade feature did not stop a sound file from handling certain files correctly. The file tended to jump at you, or you could not hear it very well. I believe it had something to do with the quality of the file itself.

Submission + - I need help, suggestions

WeeBit writes: I have created a new website (May 2010) based on a social network theme. First off I have about 80 members. Of these 80 about four post content. Always posting to the same category. The rest log in to just read the content. I want more participation. None of them participate in the groups section of the site. (Burned out on groups?) The website has been building up on people just visiting to read content also. Unfortunately this is where it ends. Everyone loves the idea, but it seems more like to just read the posts, without adding content etc.

I got the idea to go the open source route hoping this may help the website out. How could this help a social website, and how do I go about this if it is feasible? I do not mind doing a copy left instead of a copy right. But would this open the door up for others to copy my idea, instead of helping my website to grow? How do I get the Opensource community to embrace my website? Should I change the website back to a beta if I do this? Should I allow coders to create apps for the website? What things should I consider before embracing the open source community? What type of Opensource license should I consider using? Do I need to make changes? This will be my first Open Source project. I did not post the addy, because I did not want this post to look spammy. Suggestions, and ideas welcomed. Check my profile for the website url. Thanks for all help on my project.

Submission + - Are users right in rejecting security advice? (com.com)

WeeBit writes: Researchers have different ideas as to why people fail to use security measures. Some feel that regardless of what happens, users will only do the minimum required. Others believe security tasks are rejected because users consider them to be a pain. A third group maintains user education is not working. Herley offers a different viewpoint. He contends that user rejection of security advice is based entirely on the economics of the process.

Submission + - PC makers walk fine line with 'crapware'

WeeBit writes: ""For years, computer makers have managed to wring a few extra bucks of profit out of each PC sale by bundling all sorts of third-party software. While adding software, setting default search engines and including toolbars can all put money in PC makers' pockets, the practice has also alienated some consumers who say all such "crapware" is clogging their hard drives and bogging down their systems. "

PC makers walk fine line with 'crapware'

I would lots rather be offered the full version software, than get the trial versions. I don't like toolbars on the browsers at all. Plus I don't feel the public should have to pay for something they don't get in the first place. Maybe if they offered us like five software fully functional for a year at a reduced price? The trial versions are definitely hated by me, and many others. Most I never intend to use, or I prefer another software to do the job. Plus they do clog the pc with this stuff. I am a firm believer of choice. Most of the vendors though you get what you get, and your stuck with it. So normally a new computer to me means cleaning the hard drive as soon as you take it out of the box.* As I said though... Why should we pay for something we are not getting?"

Submission + - Nintendo now owns pS3!

WeeBit writes: "Market researcher NPD Group, meanwhile, noted in one of its reports that the Wii was favored among heavy game users, compared with Nintendo's PS3."

Yes it's a blunder. Located here: latest game ? restructuring

But it's a funny one too!

Submission + - The Internet May Eventually Be Scrapped

WeeBit writes: "NEW YORK — Although it has already taken nearly four decades to get this far in building the Internet, some university researchers with the federal government's blessing want to scrap all that and start over.

Internet May Eventually Be Scrapped

Correct me if I am wrong but wouldn't this piss off quite a bit of online businesses that depend on the Internet for their bread and butter? Would they be so brazen to shut the Internet down? Or is this just daydreaming?"

Submission + - Windows Vista's half-cocked firewall

WeeBit writes: "This is a review of sorts. But it is not a nice review. I know everyone is tired of the bashing towards Microsoft. But it's not my fault honest! Microsoft should of done a better job on their firewall. on to story...

Microsoft says its new Windows Firewall is now two-way, that it adds outbound protection, but a closer look reveals that this is more deceptive marketing spin. With Windows Vista what you get turns out to be a half-cocked firewall that's hardly worth the upgrade.

I sure was hoping that Microsoft would get it right this time. Maybe they will fix this? If they don't, we will not see much of a change when it comes to Window's Security. Will Vista be worth the money? I don't think so. Convince me otherwise if you can. Vista's new better firewall is NOT"

Submission + - Website offers whistleblowers chance to go global

WeeBit writes: "It's true that many don't whistle blow because they are afraid of retaliation. A discloser lawsuit, or blocking of a website by certain Governments stands in the way of most.

From the website: Wikileaks a new approach to an uncensorable Wikipedia for untraceable mass document leaking and analysis. Wikileaks will provide a forum for the entire global community to examine any document for credibility, plausibility, veracity and falsifiability. They will be able to interpret documents and explain their relevance to the public.

How well will they be able to protect the whistle blowers 100%? Will some Governments consider this a challenge? I see certain Governments blocking the website, and others filing lawsuits due to the nature of the disclosures.

I guess we shall all see how well the whistle blower is protected.

Or maybe not."

Submission + - ethics on software

WeeBit writes: "PC World has a article called "Do-it-Yourself Phishing Kit Found Online" located here: PC World Article My question is would it be ethical to ban these type software on the Internet? Or do you think it's not even feasible or a lost cause to even try? Would you? Reasons?"

Submission + - Plasma or LCD?

WeeBit writes: I saw a news article on why you should buy Plasma instead of LCD TV's. The article is located here: Buy Plasma It just sparked my interest. Flat panel TV's have the market now. Our analog TV's are on their way out. I am sure many will be thinking of purchasing their new Flat panel within the next couple years. Have you given this any thought? Which do you prefer Plasma or LCD? Why? A maker of the Plasma, Panasonic was clear to point out their reasons to go with Plasma. They sell both the Plasma and the LCD. They have been pushing ads that sell the consumer on the plasma TV's over the LCD's. You can read this here: Plasma vs lcd Is this a good argument? Or just hype? Do you still plan to go with a LCD, or do you plan to purchase a Plasma?

Submission + - The Open source gift guide

WeeBit writes: Open source gift guide There are hundreds of gift guides this holiday season filled with junk you can buy — but a lot of time you actually don't own it, you can't improve upon it, you can't share it or make it better, you certainly can't post the plans, schematics and source code either. Submission + - McAfee: Doomed! We're all doomed

WeeBit writes: McAfee advertises Windows woes ... WEB SECURITY FIRMS are feeling a bit insecure at the moment. From the looks of things many feel that Security Software will be a part of the past. I don't doubt that Vista will be better Security wise, but aren't many crying fowl far too soon? Don't count your chickens until they hatch. The biggest one to be crying fowl is Microsoft. They have no intentions on releasing any info until Vista goes public. In the news... Many have said the Vista's kernel has already been cracked. So is this doom, ... and is Microsoft so on top of things as they claim? Or are they fixing to fall hard? Who will be the looser? Us or them? http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=34 727

Submission + - Tennessee Has Meth Offender Registry

WeeBit writes: Everyone knows about the Sex Offender list... But a Meth Offender list? Tennessee is one of three States to have a meth offender list online. Is this the wave of the future? Will other States keep a watchful eye to see how these three States fair in fighting drugs? I must admit, it is a good way to see where this drug may be in your area. But is it going too far? Or should they make public online all drug offenders? I can't help but think if all States did this which ones would be the worse off? Plus I believe it would open many eyes to what is going on around them, and to be a shock to many.
